"Good defender" is stretching it. Certainly more athletic than DSR or Reggie or even Tre, but LJ does not do much with that athleticism on the defensive end. His problem is losing his guy, not getting blown by. According to Sean Miller, he was considered the best defender on the Team USA championship team and the reason he started his freshman year was because III loved his defense, so I would say he is a good defender. LJ was the best defensive player on a bad defensive team by the end of the year. I feel like, on a good defensive team, he'd be much better. Everyone will lose their man from time to time. But when it happens consistently and multiple guys do it on the same possession, it's disastrous. LJ lost his guy far less than Isaac, Tre, and DSR. Add to that that LJ was the one guy that slipped/fought over picks consistently and whose defense improved markedly over the course of the season and I think he's on a good trajectory. But, again, defense is a team thing unless you're a lock-down individual defender. We don't have any of those. At least not right now. LJ, I think, could be a very good team defense guy and, at best, could be close to a lock-down type. He just needs a team that helps with that. He didn't have that last year.

I guess my negative impressions of our total defense, coupled with LJ's early prodigious fouling problems, may have blinded me to his later defensive performance. I would certainly agree that he was in our top 2 or 3 overall (not saying much by itself, but I had forgotten Miller's comments last summer).

Is the chance of Hayes actually being granted a redshirt year now much greater than zero? Wouldn't this revolutionize the redshirt rule? I wouldn't mind having Hayes back for a fifth year, but if three years later a team could say hey, this guy hardly played three years ago, so we would now like to treat that freshman year as a redshirt year, I think it pretty much makes a mockery of the rule. It's about zero. I think Ben Standig has been reading too much HoyaTalk. "For a student-athlete to receive a Medical Hardship Waiver per Bylaw 14.2.4, the following four conditions must be met: The student-athlete may not have participated in more than two contests or dates of competition or 20 percent of the team's completed contests/dates of competition. The injury or illness must occur prior to the completion of the first half of the season. The injury or illness does not have to occur during practice/competition, but it must be incapacitating. Appropriate medical documentation must exist and be provided."Hayes played in nine of 32 games as a freshman (28%) including four in Big East play. No injury was reported. Hayes played in 16 of 33 games as a sophomore (48%) including ten in Big East play. No injury was reported. Hayes played in 17 of 33 games as a junior (51%) including 12 in Big East play. No injury was reported. This does not qualify as a medical redshirt. hayes is back for year 5...never say never

B. worked hard and waited his turn. He made a big jump last summer, and was a leader on this team. Very happy he gets the extra year to be a part of our program.
All those posters who criticized JTIII endlessly for failing to redshirt Bradley? Once again the staff knows more about what is going on than any of us.

Just tweaking a little E - definitely a night to celebrate! An extra dimension to the 16-17 Hoyas.

No excuses next year. None. Exactly - now I'm not worried about center depth. Hayes loves school and will be working on his masters i assume. I hope he shows out more like I know he can. #limitthejumphookstakeitinside

...i assume that he won't count against the scholarships? Either he's gonna pay his own way - which I highly doubt - or someone isn't returning.

diycollegerankings.com/can-college-athletes-receive-athletic-academic-scholarships/6267/Someone correct me if I'm miss reading this, but this says freshmen can get academic scholarship and not count as a counter if they meet the following criteria: "Top 10% of the high school graduating class Achieve a cumulative high school GPA of at least 3.50 Score 1200 or higher on the SAT or ACT sum score of at least 105" You'd think there'd be a lot of players around the country that would qualify for that type of aid. This PDF has a good breakdown of who is a counter and who isn't based on the type of aid the receive. home.earthlink.net/~bamajimbob/data/Counter.pdfSeems like a school like Georgetown that attracts it's fair share of academic minded ball players would be able to use this to their advantage. So there are options out there besides someone transferring.
