Tomorrow night PBS presents the premiere of Ken Burns’ latest documentary offering, Jackie Robinson, a two-part production chronicling the life of an American icon. In addition to being a civil rights trailblazer on the diamond, Robinson was just as impactful off the field. Fortunately, Burns’ film will explore that dimension as well. If you have any desire for a better understanding of race relations in America, this production offers an excellent opportunity for insight. www.thedailybeast.com/articles/2016/04/10/the-radical-political-independence-of-jackie-robinson.html

Have you seen it AGH? Because of the subject and because Burns makes really good docs (as does his brother), I would expect it to be well done. I am looking forward to checking it out. His discipline in not reacting to all the taunts and baiting was as remarkable as his play, if not more so.

Here's hoping Burns' work is less error-riddled than was "Baseball" which was replete with historically inaccurate footage.

TBH, I'm far more interested in finding out more about Jackie's off the field story than any baseball stuff, which has been well covered.

I wasn't aware of most of his post-baseball life. Revealed a lot I didn't know or had forgotten. So many challenges in his life and he died so very young. Thought the show was well done.

Check your PM, Saxa.
I enjoyed it a lot. Was surprised by several things, not the least of which was realizing how young he was at his death -- 53.

I met him in the Diamond Club at Shea Stadium at a Mets game in 1970 or 1971. Was not as impressed at 7 or 8 as I would be today, but my father the Brooklyn Dodger fan made sure I understood just how important he was.

The baseball commissioner weighs in: "Dear Fans:
April 15th is one of the most important days in the baseball calendar, Jackie Robinson Day. It is the day on which we honor a proud moment not only in baseball history, but in American history. More importantly, it is the day on which we honor the Great American who made that history, Jackie Robinson.
My observance of Jackie Robinson Day has been particularly meaningful this year. On Monday and Tuesday night, my wife and I spent four fantastic hours watching the biography of Jackie Robinson by Ken Burns, Sarah Burns and David McMahon. The documentary presents a flattering and nuanced picture of a truly brave individual."view.ed4.net/v/HML41N/RL3IPL/1WJ12OZ/CKKI8E/MAILACTION=1&FORMAT=H?partnerId=ed-10208706-888292773
