Not necessarily in terms of record but failed potential and lack of identity. Curious for all the older folks if there has ever been a Georgetown team with this much "talent" that collapsed so tragically.

Sure seems like it's the worst defensive Hoyas team I have ever seen.

If the team losses out and finishes 14-18, they will have the worst win% since John Magee 3-23, 1971-1972

This is a tricky question because I've always thought it is really difficult to compare teams from different era's. Although some people may not want to admit it, there have been some other basketball season's when this program has played pitiful basketball and embarrassed the program. Speaking of JT III's time, this team will have the worst record, so I guess at the end of the day it is the worst team, because it is about the Win/Loss record, but I think there are some similarities between this team and the 2009 underachieving mess. Now that team had 2 future NBA players, one of them a lottery pick, but that team played horrible basketball in February. The 2014 team was horrible, but Josh Smith flunks off, Whittington gets kicked off, and recruiting wise, the program looked completely ill prepared to lose Otto after only 2 years. Coach Esherick's team in 2004 was really bad, and lacked overall talent. Plus the 2004 team is another example of being completely ill prepared to lose someone to the NBA (Michael Sweetney). Another team that people don't mention was his first full year as head coach. The 1998-99 team wasn't very good and I think lost to Princeton in the NIT first round with JT III on the Princeton coaching staff. The worst team from Big John's time had to be the 1993 team when Othella was a frosh and that team struggled to score throughout the season playing some really ugly basketball.

Definitely defensively and I would argue it is because they are one of the worst communication wise as well.

However I think the worst team Pops had was 1997-98 after losing Jahidi White to a broken ankle, Kenny Brunner to jail or wherever he ended up, and losing Boumtje-Boumtje after a few early season games. If you remember, that team had walk-ons like Dean Berry, Damien Bolden, and Gharun Hester playing significant minutes. Sure we won an NIT game at Florida and probably should have beaten Georgia Tech in the 2nd round...but to me that was the worst team under JT2. 1993 was bad...but defensively that team made up for being offensively challenged.

I think a better title for this thread should be, Is the most "underachieving Georgetown team" in history

It's the worst I've seen, no question in my mind.
In 2004 at least we knew we didn't have a front court and Hibbert and Green were on deck.
In 1999, that team lost a Hall of Fame coach mid-season and in the quietest Tombs I've ever seen, lost the grandaddy of all heartbreakers at Villanova on two threes in 3 seconds. They still rallied to make the postseason.
This team, well, barring a miracle they just fade away. And they have to get better organically because there aren't any recruits coming in to make a difference.
They have talent and heart. They just need direction, development, and leadership.

No.
Agree with daytona31 about the defensive end though.

It's very difficult to say this team is worse than 2004. More disappointing, absolutely. But that team was just downright awful, so devoid of talent that we finished 261st nationally in offensive efficiency. 261! Think about that. As abominable as our D has been this year, we're still 129th nationally in efficiency. Think about how bad it would have to be to rank 261st. And considering that team forced a ton of TOs on D (and generally was a decent defensive team), they still couldn't figure out how to score easy buckets. Generally, TOs = easy baskets a lot of the time. Not for that group. But at least everyone expected that team to be hot garbage for the most part. The disappointment of this year's unmet expectations has been far worse.
And to say at least Green and Hibbert were on deck is pretty revisionist. In reality, Green was an unheralded 3 star recruit who became a revelation early on in his freshman year. And Hibbert was ranked outside the Top 100 and for a lot of his freshman year looked like he had never set foot on a basketball court before. The hype around him was because he was a million feet tall and played HS ball locally at Georgetown Prep. It's not like we knew we had future lottery picks coming as we slogged through 03-04. That 03 recruiting class was all kinds of awful and on paper the 04 class wasn't looking all that promising either.
Given those circumstances, I still hold 03-04 up there as the worst season of my fan career. Hopefully - as was the case back then - the night is always darkest just before the dawn.

When was the last time we lost 8 of 9 games? Has to be over 40 plus years.

When was the last time we lost 8 of 9 games? Has to be over 40 plus years. You must have not followed the Hoyas in 2003-2004. The team finished the season with 9 straight losses. After rattling off 10 wins -- Grambling, Penn State, Coastal Carolina, Delaware St., Norfolk St., Davidson, Elon, Howard, @citadel, and Rutgers (wow, just wow), the Hoyas then proceeded to go 3-15 for the remainder of the season. That, my friends, was the worst season in the modern era. The roster was Ashanti Cook, Brandon Bowman, Courtland Freeman, Omari Faulkner, Ken Izzo, Ray Reed, Ramell Ross, Matt Causey, Darrel Owens, Gerald Riley, Ryan Beal, Amadou Kilkenny and Sead. I guess Cook, Bowman, Freeman (maybe), Owens and Riley were OK, but the talent on that team was pretty bad. Am I the only one who remembers the three ring circus of students dressed up as clowns riding unicycles during the game in the student section? Worst team/season in the modern (ie Thompson) era. Really no comparison.

Either way, DePaul is still the inferior team.

This conversation is depressing. How bad one of our teams may or may not suck says everything about where this program is right now.
