12-7 loss to number 1 Notre Dame yesterday. Hoyas have a young team -- the program's trajectory is definitely on the upswing.

Men seem on the upswing--they actually need a win though against a top team and then I think they are back. Agree with comment
What is happening to the women though--they seem to be in a permanent downward slide. They seem to still get top recruits, though they seem a lot less athletic than the other teams. Not close to the program though I wonder about the coach, given the continual downward trend in performance, the gap between recruits and performance, and the inability to win close games. Would seem like some chg is in order if we compile another losing season-certainly would be the case if we have a losing season both this season and next again. I understand the landscape is more competitive, but as a full scholarship program we shouldn't get blown out by Delaware 2 yrs in a row and losing to all the Ivies.

Women deserve their own thread, which I'll go and start, where we can continue this discussion. But my immediate reaction is that the landscape has tilted significantly away from Georgetown's direction. With more and more state schools, particularly in the south, starting lacrosse programs (primarily for Title IX reasons), top players coming out of high school have ever more options. Many of those schools have much nicer and more extensive facilities for varsity athletes than does Georgetown. Making matters worse, the lacrosse scholarship limit for women is 12. The current Hoyas roster has 32 players on it. In the past, when most national programs were also expensive private schools like Georgetown, financial considerations probably impacted the recruiting landscape less than they do now, since even out-of-state students would likely pay less at a public university like Delaware than at Georgetown. The Ivies and their very generous financial aid are, of course, in a different category.

Men lose a squeaker at home to Hobart, 10-9.
There are some glaringly obvious problems, like continuing struggles on the X. But what I found most disconcerting today was the number of mental mistakes, resulting in oodles of EMOs and unforced turnovers. Lots of moments when I found myself scratching my head wondering what the heck they thought they were doing.
Urick's teams at least looked competent - underpowered and stale, maybe, but fully capable of putting on a lacrosse clinic. This team looked like it picked up the sport for the first time last month and only read the Cliff's Notes of the rules and strategy.
It was all the more jarring because physically it looked like the Hoyas were 11th graders playing against Hobart 9th graders. The strength, size, speed, and general athleticism all looked pretty good.

Some of the lax msg boards are beginning to ask if the coach is on the hot seat--probably not given its gtwn and the short -medium term results don't seem to matter much. I do suspect that if both the men + women have another terrible season next year like this one that both the women's and men's coaches will and should be on notice for the following yr, I guess 2017-2018, Obviously the competitive landscape has gotten tougher, but there's no reason we shouldn't be consistently at least top 20 , really 5-15 range periodically competing for natl champ.

How to you get a shot clock violation with 10 seconds left in the game and down 1?? Against a mediocre Marquette team?
I have also seen high school teams with fewer unforced turnovers.

Georgetown has clinched a losing season at 1-8, tracking for its worst record since 1982 when lacrosse was non-scholarship. Next up: #1-ranked Denver.

Nothing nice to say over here. Death spiral might be right - sure won't help recruiting when they can't be Fairfield, Mount St. Mary's and Hobart, never mind the Dukes and Denvers... Just a really awful year.

The lacrosse programs' performances are like if you had a college basketball team in the most talent laden region in the country and failed to make the tournament.

Today had to be one of Gtwns worst all time performances, complete destruction by Villanova. it was kind of like second half of '84 Kentucky- Gtwn except with us playing the role of Kentucky.

I was at the game. What a disaster. Tied 4-4 at the half and I thought the Hoyas actually outplayed the 'Cats to that point. Third quarter was an embarrassment. Unforced errors, the goalie who looked like an all-star in the first half couldn't stop anything, the defense kept getting burned on the same play time and again, face-offs were a disaster, etc. etc. Much like basketball, this is inexplicable and inexcusable. Obviously, the kids are trying, but something has to change.

Wow. UVA went 3/4 of the field with 2 passes in the last 5 seconds of the half to lead 5-2.
Hard to believe how steeply this program has collapsed.

To give credit, they have fought back to 4-5 after 3 periods. Not giving up.

Lots of coaching vacancies, including UVa failing to renew their very respected and successful coach. Standards there for lax success seem to be just a little but higher than at GU, I guess . This article is a pretty interesting take (my apologies for directing you to that site!).
