Put me in the camp of this team needing a point guard, badly! Ideally, the point guard position makes everyone better and puts his teammates in the best position to score. He is the coach on the court and the quarterback of the offense. Who used to talk to III the most during the game in seasons past? - Jon Wallace, Chris Wright, Markel Starks and now DSR (although much less and much less effectively)
One common thread in our current roster is below average passing ability. Every player on this team is a below average passer for their position. It is not DSR's fault, he is out of position, but I have been startled by how poorly Ike, Peak and Tre see the court. And not just passing into the post. Each game I see glaring opportunities to hit cutters in stride to the basket and the ball either arrives too late or the pass is never thrown. This goes back to the team's overall lack of confidence in running the offense and knowing each of them is not a natural passer.
I am desperately hoping we find a grad transfer who can upgrade the position for a year while III tries to recruit Lykes or his back-up plan to Lykes (which he better have).

Let me respectfully disagree with you Hoyasaxa2003. It appears that essentially NONE of our players are performing up to expectations except Bradley Hayes who has performed better than expected. Why is that?? Why are almost all of our players performing poorly. Even at their worst, why are we losing to teams with inferior talent?? I do think it goes back to the point guard position. With a guard who can run the team, penetrate and pass, our players would get more uncontested shots and they suddenly look better and their made percentage goes up. At any rate that is what I think. EXACTLY!!! AND WOULD CUT BACK ON TURNOVERS PLAYING INSIDE OUTSIDE BASKETBALL ON A CONSISTENT BASIS..THE REALEST COMMENT I'VE HEARD IN A LONG TIME. MAKES ME WONDER HOW MANY TRULY KNOW THE POINT GUARD POSITION, HOW CRITICAL IT IS.

We didn't have a pure pg last year and I'd say we did pretty well. Didn't hear any of this talk until after we started losing. I think our issue isn't so much we need a pure pg but another confident ball handler along with DSR, like Jabril last year. Tre/LJ/Kaleb just don't have the skill YET to replace him.

Finding a true point would help the offense run smoother and create more consistent looks on offense, but just as important is finding a few quick guards that can keep the opponents guards in front of them and out of the paint. With the new rules it is eraser said than done, but being able to pressure the ball on the perimeter and keeping opposing guards out of the paint is the first step to effective defense.
Even a good Villanova team could not keep Sumner out of the paint last night. That kid is not the prototypical little point guard but he has such great quickness and an amazing first step that he can get anywhere he wants on the floor and makes the game so much easier for his team on the offensive end.

Sumner needs to add some strength and get more consistent with his shot - but with his length/quickness/ballhandling combo, he has the raw tools to be a good NBA guard. And he is just a freshman - if he follows a normal growth curve, he'll be a real monster college player if he stays in school through his junior season. But I bet if he has another strong year next season, he'll jump to the NBA. Since he had to red shirt last year, he'll be a little older. He might even decide to jump to the NBA after this season, but I would guess at least one more year in college to develop more strength and smooth out his jumper.

SMU point guard Nic Moore is the heartbeat of his team says the tv commentator. His vision and passing is outrageus. Moore is very unselfish. I like his bounce passes. He stays low to the ground, it's harder to steal the ball from him like this. He moves quicker as well on the ball. He directs traffic without the ball. This is what our guard should be doing without hesitation. Give me two point guards if you will. I still like Tre, but he's got to be more aggressive at all costs. He's a good on the ball defender. I just need for him to himself, "I'ma take care of the ball & get into the paint, but I gotta protect the ball, but I'm going up, f it." I'm testing my heart ya'll period. But this kid Nic Moore, I haven't all season. I'm really enjoying watching point guards from different teams also lead their teams especially this time of the year. It's almost March! Beat Butler!

There are lots of good point guards right here in the DMV. I'm not worried about scoring point guards. I need good decision makers. Manages clock/shot clock. Knows your opponent's foul count. Whoemever's in foul trouble I need my point guard to keep going at them. I need my point guard to keep attacking putting drobes of pressure on the defense. A ready point guard. I'm not concerned about height. We need something we've never had a lightning quick, tough, smart coach on the court. Heart over height, aite? Let's go Hoyas! This is what the Hoyas have to look for in the near future. When your point guard is playing tough everyone else will also. It becomes contagious and it's a beautiful sight to see. Get em hyped. The Hoyas still enough firepower to win. If only the Hoyas could play consisent attacking and getting the ball inside everything else will take care of itself believe it or not. All this effects the defense as well, but can be fixed. A good point guard can play and lead in any system because they are smart and unselfish.

Would you rather have Otto Porter or Mo Watson? On this team? Mo Watson. Move DSR to shooting guard and he would light things up as would LJ and Ike. Have you seen Watson? Man, I'd trade two Ottos for Watson right now. Yeah I don't think a true point guard magically turns Copeland into a consistent contributor. But we do need a leader on the floor.

Not MAGICALLY BUT TRUTHFULLY BY GIVE HIM THE DAMN BALL AND TELLING HIM TO ATTACK THE PAINT. A POINT GUARD IS SUPPOSE TO MAKE HIS/HER TEAMMATES AS RULE!! LOOK IT UP!!!

To me, he looked a lot quicker with the ball in his hands last night, but maybe that was just a product of improved handle but he looked comfortable taking multiple dribbles and keeping his shoulders/chin towards the rim in a way I haven't seen him do before these last two games. Kudos to him for realizing he needed to round out his game and use his length to get to the basket more.

His three ball should be for keeping defenses honest, but his bread and butter should be from around the foul line and driving. When he's doing that, everything else seems to click a lot better.
