Another problem with RPI - and Pomeroy for that matter - ss that teams are really close to each other this year and actual differences between 30 and 40 or 30 and 50 are much closer than they have been in other years. Loo, for example at the number of losses in the top 10. The impact of the parity is such that you can move up or down 25 spots with a medium sized upset. For this year's Hoyas, that's a feature not a bug....

Lunardi now has Hoyas in 1st Four Out. Seton Hall is in that group with us.

There's a joke about 2 guys in a tent with a grizzly bear outside ready to tear the tent apart. They decide to run for it. One guy notices the other is putting on running shoes. He laughs and tells the guy he will never outrun the bear. The guy says its not the bear I have to outrun. This is our situation. We don't have to outrun Providence or Nova or Xavier (although wins against them will be great). We only have to outrun Creighton, Butler, Seton Hall and maybe Marquette. DePaul and St John's are toast. So if we can finish 4th in the BE I can't believe we don't get a bid. Butler is looking very shaky and Marquette is one bad loss away from kissing the NCAA goodbye. So my take is that a sweep of Seton Hall is the key to our NCAA hopes. And of course WE CANNOT LOSE TO ST. JOHN'S.

We need to be 12-6 or 11-7 and win our Thursday game in my opinion. Any way you slice it.

Someone please shut down this thread. We have 9 losses and it's not even February yet. We've lost 5 games at home. And needed a miracle to avoid a sixth.
If we get to 12-6 in conference, are we probably in? Yeah. But how the hell is this group going to get there?
Win the BET and we're in. Otherwise, we will be watching this group in the NIT. Wasting a lot of talent this year.

For all the bandwagon talk that Copeland was an early entry candidate, he is looking more and more like someone who has lost his game. Peak played very well, as did Hayes. Too often, however, we watch DSR sleep-walk through the first half and Georgetown is then playing uphill after halftime too many times. Having Copeland or Campbell on their games would help, but it was nowhere to be found tonight. Three of the next four on the road--need to win three of four.

Wasting a lot of talent this year. The "talent" is there but we were expecting a lot out of Copeland, who just has not produced, and White, who's injured. Given what we know now, I don't think my expectations would've been so high. Clearly our bad losses are the biggest problem. And games we absolutely should NOT have lost. They're inexcusable and have changed the entire narrative of our season.

The "talent" of the sophomore class has been non-existent, and it's a huge problem for this team:
Copeland - Major regression, when most expected him to improve on last year. He's not even as good as he was last year.
Campbell - Aside from the Xavier game, Campbell hasn't shown much of anything.
White - Injured, so by default, that's a negative (not his fault, of course).
Peak - Better offensively, fouls much worse defensively.
I think all of us had expectations that the sophomore class would be a major key to this season, and they have failed to do that as a collective unit.
All of that said, I haven't given up on the NCAA tournament, and it's silly to say that we should "lock up" the thread. I'm not saying it's a sure thing, but it would not shock me at all if we go to Providence and win there.

No. This makes no sense. I wouldn't be shocked if we go to Providence and win, or steal another game we're "supposed" to lose. Listen, our situation stinks. This was a very bad result for our odds of making the tournament. Now, if we lose a few more of the next 3-4 games, I might agree we're out of it. I'm not necessarily confident it'll happen, but as long as there's a chance, there's a place for this thread.

we're done. shut it down. Our "leader" said he did a good job defensively on Dunn. Apparently with a straight face. We're hanging our hopes on a 5'6" kid. We're done.

No one is forcing you to read this thread or any other for that matter. No one is forcing you to watch games and follow the program. I'm sure you'd be a lot happier (and everyone else around here would be too), if you just went away. Why don't you shut it down for the season too.

Realistically, we needed a split with Prov. So now we try and get it on the road where they place worse. We didn't lose much ground by losing.

Yeah, that certainly wasn't the game that made me think, "shut it down, now we are not making the tournament." I think I would have been in that frame of mind if we lost to Creighton (And, oh, yeah, not to rub it in , but Seton Hall smoked Creighton in Omaha last night. Let's please get off the Creighton love fest. They ain't good.)

By not losing much ground, do you mean that our RPI stayed in the 70s? With our lack of good wins (aside from X) and our atrocious losses, we can't afford to tread water at this point. We were favored at home against a good (not great) team, and we failed to get a win that we needed. The more of these we botch, the more upsets we will have to pull (like @nova or @prov or home to Xavier) to even start thinking NCAAs.

Fwiw Lunardi tweeted that Hoyas would've been in his hypothetical bracket with a win last night. Hard to imagine they get dinged too much for a close loss against a top 10 team. Still plenty of chances for good wins but the margin for error isn't large. The 4 games against Butler and Seton Hall are huge since they are likely to be on the same part of the bubble as us. While I agree they need to play better in order to win the games they need to, our tourny life is not on life support quite yet.

I do, however, agree with the sentiment of frustration regarding JTIII's comments about defense on Dunn being good. The comment about a 5'6" recruit is just borne of frustration and not appropriate. I would, however, reiterate mine and other's sentiments regarding our difficulty getting guard to commit to the program.
