RDF, thanks for bringing the thread back on topic. Here's why I don't like Duke and Coach K -- during the height of the Vietnam War he coached basketball and never filled a regular billet, ever:
"He attended the United States Military Academy for college and played basketball while training to become an officer in the Army. From 1969-74, Krzyzewski served in the military and directed service teams for three years and then followed that up with two years as head coach of the U.S. Military Academy Prep School in Belvoir, Va."

Billy Beane's track record as of late: In 1999, the Athletics ranked 11th in the American League in payroll, and fifth in wins. In 2000, the Athletics ranked 12th in payroll, and second in wins. In 2001, the Athletics ranked 12th in payroll, and second in wins. In 2002, the Athletics rank 12th in payroll, and first in wins. In 2003, the Athletics rank 10th in payroll, second in wins. He has had to part with two MVPs [tejada and giambi], two very good closers [isringhausen and foulke], and two aces [mulder and hudson]. yet the A's remain competitive. I think the A's and Twins are the two best run franchises in the majors given their payrolls relative to their records, but Beane has done a lot more with a lot less in a division that has been much better than the AL Central for the last few years. All due respect to Terry Ryan, but he isn't in Beane's ballpark. Not even the same league. Hell, not even the same fckn sport. Ummmm....how bout no. True, Terry Ryan didn't get a book written about him, but 3 straight division titles and a playoff series victory (over Beane's A's) gotta at least put him even with Beane.

SF, the difference is that Jeter wouldn't have done that move to knock the ball out of Arroyo's hand. The hatred for Jeter is amazing in some people. Whether it's the "he is overrated" or "he isn't as good as....." well all I know is the guy plays the game like it should be played--hard every game and with high character. He earns respect from his peers because he doesn't cheat, does things without saying "look at me" and doesn't make excuses.
I have no problem if you criticize specifics of Jeter's game but if you gave me a choice of who I would rather have on my team, I'd take him over A-Rotten anyday and sure seems like most Major Leaguers feel the same.
The hatred for Jeter has much of the same sources as the hatred for Duke -- namely, his supporters think he can do no wrong.
Let me be clear on Jeter. I will say I have been called a "Jeter-hater" just for saying these things:
1) He's a Hall of Famer. 2) He seems like a really great person. 3) He's very good going back on pop-ups, and has decent range to his right. But he has trouble with balls to his left and his 'jump throw' on balls to his right is much like Brett Favre's -- completely unnecessary and makes people overrate him. Defensively, he's a below average Shortstop. 4) Alex Rodriguez is both a better fielder and a better hitter than him, day in and day out. Is he a better leader? Clutch player? I have my opinions on both but I'll keep quiet here.
I do not understand why the above makes me a "Jeter-hater" but I have been branded that.
As for the Steriod Boy--Wormy aka Giambi,
Agree. The guy is a consistent hard-core cheater, and has no values but $$$. I can respect someone who leaves a team for money, as long as they say so. Giambi said all the right things in Oakland -- he loved the party atmosphere (kegs in the clubhouse), playing with his brother and the California lifestyle. Then he had the gall to say he left over a no-trade clause. Whatever. He deserves New York.
As for Dookie V, he's a clown.
Agree. He's awful. He's a walking catchphrase and that's it.

Terry Ryan used to be head of Twins scouting if I remember correctly. So I assume he's running the player development / scouting parts. And he has made a bunch of successful trades:
He got Shannon Stewart (MVP of the 2nd half in 2003) for Bobby Kielty.
He got Rick Reed for Matt Lawton in 2002 (which paid off in 2003, as Reed and Lohse were the only good players)
He got Johan Santana in the Rule V.
He robbed the Giants in the Nathan Pierzynski trade (the Twins also got two other studs pitching prospects).
He also got the Twins current starter (Jason Bartett) at SS for Buck Buchanon a couple of years ago.
The Mienktwictz over Ortiz choice was a mistake, but the Ortiz of 2002 wasn't the same Ortiz that has been playing for the Sox the last two years and the Twins emphasize defense and fundamentals, which isn't Ortiz' forte'. Resigning Jones was done b/c his replacement (Jason Kubel) blew his knee out in the offseason and won't be back til next year. And Rivas and Guzman are both frustrating, but they've showed flashes of brillance. Guzman was an All-Star in 2001 and Rivas was amazing in 2002 for a long stretch of the season.
And while I'll give you that the A's play in a harder division than the Twins, the Twins have won a playoff series (over the A's in 2002) and the win totals weren't ever significantly different the last three years except for that year. And I don't think the Twins have had that much bigger of a payroll than the A's either. I'm not saying Ryan is a better GM than Beane, just that they are the two best.
