I think the Dems will ultimately back down here, but we'll see. Bad idea to shut the government down (yeah, it was a bad idea in the past, and it's still a bad idea), although I could live with shutting down the White House, if that were only a possibility.

On a humorous note, I was furloughed in 1995 (thanks Newt Gingrich!) when I was in Civil Division, DOJ, and considered non-essential. Me and colleagues from several different components of Civil Division headed straight to the Old Ebbitt Grill at about 10:45 in the morning after receiving my furlough notice as it was illegal to volunteer for the USG and we had to depart the workplace. Ten hours later, we'd run up a tab of over $6,000 which I put on my Amex and took cash from my colleagues. The following December 1996 I received a Christmas gift card from the Clyde's Restaurant Group worth $100 for being a top 100 customer in 1995 -- which I promptly spent at 1789 with a lady friend. That didn't go far at the 89, even back then. But Pino should have still been working the bar there. Did he ask you if you wanted a (imagine a charming and thick Italian accent) "little popper" as you passed by the bar? I loved that man. He was a show unto himself. Engaging, charming, really funny and quick as all heck with a drink to boot.

The fact that your hypocrisy radar only pings for Democrats is rather...hypocritical. How very meta of you. This one made me chuckle.

As you say, $100 even back then didn't go that far. Never could afford it as a college student. As a side note, the current General Manager at the 1789/Tombs is a Hoya SFS'05. I knew him when he was a bartender at the Ebbitt and left for a managers position at the 1789/Tombs and was promoted to GM in 2013. He says he loves his job because he manages both a fine dining establishment upstairs and one of the nation's top college bars downstairs.

Otherwise, I'd not have been in there either. The stairs down from the 89 to the Tombs were a huge perk

Trump removed their protected status, then started agreeing to deals, then rejecting the deals he agreed to days before.
It’s impossible to have a compromise if people won’t state their goals with some kind of good faith.
If only we would have known this would be an issue before he became president...

It's the Democrats fault this Administration knows nothing, keeps changing it's positions, and has no plan of their own..
It's also the Democrats fault Trump rejected the Durbin/Graham bi-partisan solution to keep the government open.

It's also the Democrats fault Trump rejected the Durbin/Graham bi-partisan solution to keep the government open. After indicating that he would support it only hours earlier. But that's ok, because consistency is the hobgoblin of small minds.

An entire generation of Republicans was raised on the conceit that they were morally superior to Democrats. Calling themselves the party of "family values" and impeaching Bill Clinton for lying about a blow job.
But their guy paying hush money to a porn star a month before the election? All good as long as they get conservative judges and tax reform.

Hasn't George W (tax cuts during time of war and using supplemental appropriations to fund the wars) and now Trump blown up that myth? (Remember Dick "Five Deferments" Cheney: "Deficits don't matter." He must be chuckling over that now that as far as the GOP is concerned he has been proven correct).

People are still buying the trickle down theory justification of the tax plan even though that's been proven a fallacy on multiple occasions at different levels of government. They also tend to be the party of Christians. Have you seen much in the way of behavior/policies from that side that jibe with true Christian values in the past 20 years?

Sam Brownback and his disastrous experience in Kansas comes to mind.
