HIS & AVG, I see the Cantabs are still undefeated! Yes, Harvard remains undefeated. A season without a loss is quite achievable when an above-average team plays the 228th toughest schedule in major college football. sagarin.com/sports/cfsend.htmCall me when the "Cantabs" make it past the second round of the FCS playoffs. Week 11 Picks for Games that Matter Georgia over Auburn in the Deep South's Oldest Rivalry Ohio State over Illinois for Illibuck Alabama over Mississippi State Navy over SMU for the Gansz Trophy Houston over Memphis Arkansas upsets LSU for the Golden Boot Oklahoma over Baylor Iowa over Minnesota for Floyd of Rosedale Hawaii over Fresno State for the Golden Screwdriver South Dakota over South Dakota State for the first time since 2000 Eastern Washington over Montana for the Governors Cup Cal Poly over Cal-Davis for the Golden Horseshoe

Yes, Harvard remains undefeated. A season without a loss is quite achievable when an above-average team plays the 228th toughest schedule in major college football. Call me when the "Cantabs" make it past the second round of the FCS playoffs. That would be quite an accomplishment because the Crimson won't make it to the first round of the playoffs because of the self-imposed Ivy ban. And therein lies the issue--Harvard isn't going to schedule I-A heavyweights, but their non-conference schedule of Georgetown, Rhode Island and Lafayette (combined record 6-22, Georgetown accounts for four of those six wins) is admittedly weak. But if there's no penalty for strength of schedule and an Ivy title is all that matters, the lure of a 10-0 season is much more valuable to Harvard's reputation than to be 8-2 with crushing losses to CAA or Southern Conference schools. Harvard is at the forefront of the Ivy move away from PL scholarship teams. They'll keep Georgetown (and Holy Cross for a few more years), but the Cantabs have no interest in getting clocked by Fordham or Colgate.

For the Cantabs in football, it's the Ivy championship that counts. Been working out ok under Murphy.

I assume that the Ivy rationale for the self-imposed ban is "too many games?" I just assumed your initial comment was tongue in cheek. And yes, that's basically it. The Ivy hockey teams play a shorter schedule than most other schools, too.

Why is there a trophy for a game between Navy and SMU?

Austin over Northwestern State for Chief Caddo Sacramento State over Cal-Davis in the Causeway Classic for the Causeway Carriage McNeese State over Lamar in the Battle of the Border
*Some call this the Holy War, but I believe that term should be reserved for the BYU-Utah contest. **Probably the most boring name for a trophy in all of college athletics. ***Officially, this game is named the Brawl of the Wild, but kchoya reports that nobody in Montana calls it that. ***Yale has defeated Harvard only twice this century. The Crimson go for nine straight wins on Saturday.

Damn straight! I still remember watching the 2002 game at the Peanut Farm in Anchorage and seeing the Cats snap a 16-game losing streak. I can't believe it's that time of the year already.

***Yale has defeated Harvard only twice this century. The Crimson go for nine straight wins on Saturday. That's twice too often. Go Crimson (Saturday's shocking loss to Penn notwithstanding).

Not exactly a surprise. Rutgers president Robert Barchi (a Hoya for bachelors and masters degrees) was under pressure from alums and what passes for the media in New Jersey to make these moves. Julie Hermann was a poor choice for AD in the first place, and the football program under Kyle Flood has fallen into disarray both on and off the field. Students have stopped attending games: one sportswriter noted that the student section had arrived for yesterday's game against Maryland, and that his name was Joe.
Barchi has already hired a new AD, and it is expected that Rutgers will move quickly to hire a new head football coach. The New York Post is reporting that Greg Schiano has already been offered the job.

I guess stupid minds think alike.

Rivalry Week Recap
South Florida crushed UCF in the War on I-4 Texas Tech edged Texas for the Chancellor's Spurs Iowa defeated Nebraska for the Heroes Trophy (and the Big Ten West title) TCU slid by Baylor in the Revivalry Oregon held on against Oregon State in the Civil War for the Platypus Trophy U-Dub slaughtered Wazzu in the Apple Cup for the Apple Cup
Central Michigan defeated Eastern Michigan in a Michigan MAC Trophy game (Western Michigan clinched the trophy in October) Arkansas defeated Mizzou in the Battle Line Rivalry for the Battle Line Trophy* Clemson defeated S. Carolina in the Palmetto Bowl for the Palmetto Bowl Trophy** Alabama defeated Auburn in the Iron Bowl for the James E. Foy, V-ODK Sportsmanship Trophy Oklahoma rolled Oklahoma State in the Bedlam game for the Bedlam Bell Michigan State defeated Penn State for the Land Grant Trophy Stanford broke Irish hearts and defeated Notre Dame for the Legends Trophy Ohio State stomped Michigan Florida State shut out the Florida offense N. Carolina defeated N.C. State Northwestern defeated Illinois for the Sweet Sioux Tomahawk Land of Lincoln Trophy Ole Miss defeated Mississippi State in the Egg Bowl for the Golden Egg Southern Cal repainted the Victory Bell in cardinal & gold by defeating UCLA in the Battle for Los Angeles Utah defeated Colorado in the Rumble in the Rockies*** Indiana defeated Purdue for the Old Oaken Bucket Virginia Tech defeated U. Va. for the Commonwealth Cup Georgia defeated Georgia Tech in the Clean, Old-Fashioned Hate game for the Governor's Cup Louisville defeated Kentucky for the Governor's Cup Wisconsin defeated Minnesota for Paul Bunyan's Axe BYU defeated Utah State for the Old Wagon Wheel Tennessee defeated Vanderbilt K-State rolled Kansas in the Sunflower Showdown for the Governor's Cup
*Yet another "rivalry" created by conference marketers following realignment **The Palmetto Bowl Trophy replaces the Hardee's Trophy, which was awarded for 30 years and represents one of the earlier instances of college football selling out to corporate America. ***Utah's replacement of BYU with struggling Colorado on the rivalry week schedule is so depressing. It screws up the Beehive Boot and deprives us of one of CFB's great rivalry games.
Championship Week Picks for Games that Matter:
Bowling Green over Northern Illinois (MAC Championship) Cougar High over Temple (AAC Championship) Western Kentucky over Southern Miss (C-USA Championship) Alabama over Florida (SEC Championship) Air Force over San Diego State (Mountain West Championship) Stanford over Southern Cal (Pac-12 Championship) Iowa over Michigan State (Big Ten Championship) N. Carolina over Clemson (ACC Championship)
Week 15 Picks for Games that Matter:
Go Navy! Beat Army! (for the Thompson Cup and the Commander-in-Chief's Trophy)

Is Saban the best ever? Not sure I know the answer but he is in the conversation. 4 in 7 years is amazing in the BCS/Playoff era of actual title games.
That onside kick was brilliant and brave.

I'll tell you what else was brilliant - putting the tight end back in the offense. I understand that kid had a quiet year, so Clemson apparently decided not to cover him.
