Preseason Top 25: www.cbssports.com/collegefootball/eye-on-college-football/25254436/ohio-state-ranked-no-1-in-preseason-coaches-pollWeek 1 Picks for Games That Matter: Alabama over Wisconsin... ...and that's all. If you're new to the board, this yearly thread contains a weekly feature in which yours truly lists traditional rivalry games, trophy games, revenge games, and games between FBS teams ranked in the Top 25. This year, there will be fewer of those games than ever. Conference realignment has ripped apart rivals such as Texas-TAMU, Pitt-West Virginia, and Utah-BYU. The team which has traditionally appeared most frequently in the weekly list, Notre Dame, will skip Purdue (for the first time since the end of WWII) and Michigan State this season. The Shillelagh and the Megaphone will gather dust in South Bend for the foreseeable future, but fear not, Irish fans: there are exciting home games against the likes Wake Forest on the horizon thanks to Notre Dame's new "affiliation" with the Atlantic Coast Conference. Looking forward to Labor Day weekend...

That's all? No tOSU versus VT? No Khaki Pants at the Utes? No Bison at the Grizzlies? Nope. Ohio State's trip to Blacksburg would be a revenge game but for the fact that last year's loss to the Hokies in Columbus was ultimately meaningless. Neither Michigan nor Utah is ranked, and I'm not sure that's a revenge game either given that Michigan went 5-7 last season and posted a 4-3 record at the Big House. I typically don't include FCS games unless they're traditional rivalries, because then I don't have to field questions about whether Eastern Washington at Oregon (technically a game between two teams ranked in Top 25 polls) should be included. (Huge win for the Griz though.)

Week 2 Picks for Games That Matter:
Utah over Utah State in the Battle of the Brothers (also a Beehive Boot game) (Friday) Tennessee over Oklahoma Iowa over Iowa State for the Cy-Hawk Trophy Marshall over Ohio in the Battle of the Bell for The Bell Michigan State over Oregon in a revenge game Mississippi State over LSU
Although it's not a game that matters, Rice plays Texas on Saturday. I'm setting the O/U for references to this speech during the broadcast at 4.

I don't think BYU is going to beat UCLA, but I find the line on this game to be insane. And Colorado is favored over Colorado State? If I were a betting man, I'd parlay those two games.

The Cougars came close... Week 4 Picks for Games that Matter: Tennessee over Florida (for the first time since 2004) Texas Tech over TCU in the West Texas Championship for the West Texas Championship Saddle* TAMU over Arkansas in the Southwest Classic Arizona over UCLA Utah over Oregon** Fresno State over San Jose State in the Valley Cup for the Valley Trophy ON EDIT: I missed a game. Georgetown over Columbia for the Lou Little Trophy (nice write-up, DFW): www.hoyafootball.com/history/little1.htm*If the Big 12 were smart, it would bring back the saddle trophy (which may still be somewhere in a Tech basement in Lubbock) and re-brand this game as a rivalry. It's not hard to do. (See TAMU-Arkansas, Iowa-Nebraska, etc.) Expect high scoring in this one. **The Utes were en route to an upset in SLC last season before a QB injury and a bizarre play (see below) gave the Ducks momentum.

What, no prediction for the Kansas at Rutgers game is Piscataway, which contest has been named the battle for "Power 5 Dumpster Fire Team of the Year?"

Week 5 Picks for Games that Matter:
Oklahoma over West Virginia Wisconsin over Iowa for the Heartland Trophy Navy over Air Force in a Commander in Chief's Trophy game Alabama over Georgia Nevada over UNLV in the Battle for Nevada for the Fremont Cannon Ole Miss over Florida TAMU over Mississippi State Notre Dame over Clemson New Mexico over New Mexico State in a Rio Grande Rivalry game for the Maloof Trophy* San Diego State over Fresno State for the Oil Can**
Sam Houston State over Stephen F. Austin in the Battle of the Piney Woods Rhode Island over Brown for the Governor's Cup South Dakota State over North Dakota State for the Dakota Marker (for the first time since 2009)
I haven't been diligent about checking the FCS scoreboard this season, and I missed a big game last week. Grambling State defeated Prairie View A&M in the State Fair Classic.
*Apparently the Maloof Trophy was retired in 2000, but I just learned this information. Whoops.
**Yes, these two schools play for trash recovered from a San Diego construction site.

LSU's Leonard Fournette is a load. This story checks out. Fournette may very well be the best player in the country, but he doesn't have enough help from his teammates. LSU had trouble putting away Syracuse last week. Other assorted thoughts from the little football I have been able to watch this season: Texas Tech will win 10 games this year. Kingsbury has re-established that Mike Leach feeling (complete with press conference put-downs of other teams) in Lubbock. Ole Miss is overrated. Alabama started the wrong QB and turned the ball over five times during their Week 2 game. However, Ole Miss may very win the SEC West, the most overrated division in college football. Michigan shut out a good BYU team last week. And that loss on the road at Utah (which I didn't see) looks almost like a moral victory after the Utes pounded Orgeon in Eugene. Maybe this Harbaugh guy can coach. Texas might start the season 1-5, but I'm optimistic about the future because of Jerrod Heard. Gary Pinkel cannot achieve consistent success at Missouri. The Tigers look like a team that mailed it in during offseason practice.

I couldn't have been more impressed with a team's pass defense than Michigan's last week. Michigan - MSU is going to be real interesting given last week's results. The SEC supporters were all giddy when they had a billion teams in the Top 25, but anyone who actually follows college football knew that was hype.

In the spirit of full disclosure, I thought they were going to lose last week, too.

LSU's Leonard Fournette is a load. I hope the 'Leonard Fournette Should Be Able To Enter The Draft After This Season' hype/talk doesn't affect his play in a negative way. His situation is starting to remind me of the Jadeveon Clowney talk a few years ago when a lot of media-types started to overhype him and say it's not fair for him to be in college. In my opinion, all that talk caused him to play cautiously and not give a full effort during his last year. Fournette has been dominant so far, but he's just played against 2 SEC teams. These people should wait a few more games before encouraging him to stop playing right now and sit out until the 2017 draft.

I am actually waiting for you to thank me for causing two UCLA victories by picking against the Bruins. Pac-12 games have always been tough to predict, and this year is no exception. Also, I should have listened to myself ("Ole Miss is overrated") when picking last Saturday's games.

Fournette has more talent than his offensive line, and I think it will show in the second half of the season when LSU faces better defenses.
