So name our defenders for next year. Here's my take on our squad.
Guard: DSR - Showed strong flashes last year but probably just average to above average Tre - much to improve but has potential Riyan - not enough data
Forwards: Ike: Moments of him falling asleep still haunt my mind but he can and must get better Paul: Better than advertised but needs to do more to be a great defender LJ: Think he is going to be one of the best on the team Reggie: Tries hard but haven't seen the lateral quickness Trey: Needs more meat to play the 4 but hopeful his fundamentals will overcome Derrickson: Excited about his ability but he will be a freshman Kaleb: Not sure how much time he will see
Centers: Bradley: Needs to step it up and I don't want to start a fire but his defense has to improve Agau: I'm assuming will play the 5 and will have an opportunity to grow Jessie: Will help open the offense but will need to improve his defense and he's a freshman big man

He may have to be this year, but no, he is not a guard at the moment. Stop trying to cram this narrative down peoples' throats. www.guhoyas.com/sports/m-baskbl/mtt/gu-m-baskbl-mtt.html

Can the mods start a poll asking about LJ's position? I'd be curious to see what the breakdown is amongst HTers. I say guard personally.

As far as G-fense goes, he can lock down against the 1, 2 or 3, whatever that makes him.

Offense wins championships:
2015:Duke Offense 3rd Defense 12th 2014: Uconn Offense 39th Defense 10th 2013: Lousiville offense 4th Defense 3rd 2012: Kentucky Offense 2nd Defense 8th 2011: Uconn Offense 18th Defense 13th 2010: Duke offense 1st Defense 8th 2009: UNC offense 1st Defense 21st 2008: Kansas Offense 2nd Defense 1st 2007: Florida offense 1st Defense 17th 2006: Florida offense 3rd Defense 6th 2005: UNC offense 2nd Defense 12th 2004: Uconn Offense 9th Defense 5th 2003: Cuse Offense 14th Defense 14th 2002: Maryland Offense 2nd Defense 7th
Obviously you need both, but in general offense is slightly more important.

Individually our roster is predominated by very average or slightly below ave defense if we take those ratings at face value. I may disagree with some of the individual coments but on the whole i'm in agreement with your assesment.
We lost to graduation 2 of our better individual defenders in Hopkins and Trawick. On paper this doenot present a pretty picture defensively coming into this season. The defensive system that has heavy emphasis on help and rotation which covers for individual defensive lapses and skills may be tested heavily this year. Not because the individual defensive ability team wise is that far removed past rosters but that the youth and inexperience of a predominately frosh. and soph. club at key spots especially down low and little backcort depth could cause major issues especially early.
The answer. We better be able to score this season.

Just a thought, you can't teach height and wingspan and part of being a great defensive squad is having both. I suspect if someone has Pomeroy, our projected height next year is pretty good!

Nice breakdown... very good balance is the key... Where did we rank in JT3's only FF appearance?

While note the next year we were Offense 24th Defense 6th.

Given we have some decent length next season and we lost a couple of our better man to man defenders, wouldn't playing zone make some sense? Last year we rarely went to it, but during the Otto seasons it was a staple. These guys should be able to pick it up if they dedicate some practice time to it. I could see it being very effective when we play a bigger line-up, such as when LJ or White play the 2. Even Tre has some length which would be helpful.

When we have had the right mix of players with length and a little speed the zone has been our most effective defense especially when our players have a high defensive IQ. Last season especially early our zone was torched and virtually abandoned for most of the schedule but with the experience gained during the year we did start going to it with a lot more success in mid february. Campbell and Ike were continually lost and out of position and even White who played predominately a zone in high school would get pulled up top and give up open space on the baseline which should never happen. A zone and the types that we look to play are pretty aggressive at the top and to the elbow extended and reguire communication rotation and help a hard thing to do with young players getting heavy minutes.
Another reason why the Italy trip and the additional practice time should pay big dividends once we get to January.

Another reason why the Italy trip and the additional practice time should pay big dividends once we get to January. Our zone was hurt by Josh's lack of mobility because he left too much space open. With Hayes, Govan, Agau et al., that will not be the case. With more experience and more defensive discipline from last year's returning players, and Hayes or Govan at C, IMO next year's zone will be much better than last year.

I agree that the zone could be a great arrow in our quiver next year.
I miss the days when the team could get a stop almost on queue when needed. That was a special time and I would love to see that again. This team may never get there but if they could get close I will start thinking about tickets to Houston.
