Thought some might enjoy this video containing clips from the exhibition game between Georgetown and the Chilean National Team. It took place on November 5, 1972. This was John Thompson's first game coaching Georgetown. Thanks to Mex Carey, GU SID, for help getting this video. Mex also provided a ton of pics and a copy of the game program. Still looking for a box score. My dad was coach of the Chilean team.

I had forgotten what kind of contributions Mike Stokes brought early on.

Thanks billvol for this. Was the no dunking rule in place when this game was played? I saw several opportunities for dunks, which were not taken. Who won?

I had forgotten what kind of contributions Mike Stokes brought early on. It was also fun remembering how athletic Merlin Wilson was before his back-injury Sleepy, do you remember why Stokes left the team? And where he went? Mike was one of 5 recruits who arrived at GU with JT in his first class.

I am pretty sure the no dunk rule was in effect. Seems like it didn't come back until later than you might think. Maybe '76?
On their tour of the US, Chile had a couple of games in which they performed over their heads combined with the other team not playing well. GU was one of those games. Marquette was another (also on YouTube). Marquette wound up winning by around 17. Chile was also inspired by a good number of Chileans in attendance along with the Chilean ambassador, Orlando Letelier, who had a lot of charisma and charmed everyone at a lunch at the ambassador's residence.

Mike was one of 5 recruits who arrived at GU with JT in his first class. I believe he went to the Third Edition for a few years. For some reason i think he went back to school his father was a professor at GU for quite some time.

Two Americans were in the car with him (one died). Everybody with the Chilean team loved meeting him. I was a kid but remember meeting him at this lunch. He was really a great guy. I don't understand the politics behind it all, but it was not a political event that day of the game.

I was at the game. My sophomore year. There were a number of Chilean students there and I remember their distinctive chant.
Some nice takes to the basket by Jon Smith. Looked like some significant minutes by Magee holdovers Tim Lambour, Mark Gallagher and Vince Fletcher.
Was interesting to note the number of jump balls. No alternate possession rule then for tie-ups
Great footage. Thanks so much for sharing.

2ndRyan, I'm sure that was the great "Ceachei" cheer. They've been doing it forever. It starts out with one person shouting "C-H-I," which phonetically, in Spanish, sounds like "say-ah-chay-ee" (or how they write it in Chile, "Ceachei"). And everybody then says, "CHEE." Then the one person says "L-E" (sounds like "elay-ay"). Followed by everyone saying, "LAY." Then everybody together says, "CHEE-CHEE-CHEE; LAY-LAY-LAY; VI-VA CHEE-LAY." It is really awesome to hear in person. You can hear it at the end of this commercial.
BTW, GU won, 71-66.

A friend who reads this board emailed me the box score. Some of the Chilean names are butchered. I'm going to add them to the video, spelled correctly. I'll go to one of the Georgetown media guides to get spellings and first names for the Hoyas. Do these names for the Hoyas in the box score look correct? If not, let me know, please. Tim Lambour, Billy Lynn, Vince Fletcher, Merlin Wilson, Mark Edwards, Mark Gallagher, Greg Brooks, Jonathan Smith, Ron Lyons, Rick Kentz, Mike Stokes.

I believe Stokes was part of Thompson's first class. Merlin Wilson. Greg Brooks and Jon Smith played for Thompson at St. Anthony's. Mike Stokes was from St John's. Billy Lynn was from Springarn (sp?)a public high school in DC.
