Amtrak used to run a route thru Tallahassee, FL....those days are gone and CSX owns the railroads there. Now Amtrak is limited to the East coast of Florida up to the New England area....As a child, me and my mother would take the Amtrak to D.C and back to Florida as Amtrak was cheaper than flying...Nowadays even inspite of 9/11 and the hike in the plane fares it is till cheaper to fly than to take 2 days by Amtrak to travel to D.C and South Florida.
Unless Amtrak tickets lower considerably, they will never be able to expand beyond the East Coast on a competitive basis.

Airports get de facto subsidies from parking, rental car, and taxi rights fees because, unlike the rest of the world, there are few places in the U.S. where you can take a train to the airport from the surrounding region or catch a train from the airport to popular destinations. I have ridden MARC and NJ-Transit more than Amtrak because MARC makes it pretty easy to get to from DC to BWI or Baltimore and back and I used to ride NJT from Princeton to Penn Station and occasionally to Newark airport.
But when I fly into almost anywhere else in the U.S. I don't have that choice.

Wait, TJI is from Florida...Hifi, you sonofa
On the infrastructure debate, any rail put in that isn't mag-lev is a mistake. Also, the speeds of mag-lev would bring rail back into relevance as being faster than car yet less intrusive than flying.

There is evidence now that both the Amtrak train and a septa train where both hit by projectiles in nearly the same time and place moments before the crash. There is a lot more to this story.
