Trey Mourning would have benefitted.
But very few do. People can complain that Thompson doesn't do it, and perhaps they are right that we should do it more, BUT people should at least ask why almost no other coach does it at all and almost no one does it often. Not the truly elite programs, not programs like ours, not the Northwesterns of the world, not the Wichita States (I don't think), not the Howards.
I think there's a couple of things playing in.
One, you've got to think about the players' desire. Maybe they don't want to be here five years. Maybe they want to play even a little. Maybe very few can be realistic about their minutes.
Or maybe, it's the coaching staff. Perhaps they would rather have a new recruit and the scholarship than Bradley's fifth year. Or at least they thought that back in his Freshman year. Perhaps talent evaluation is so tough that when they take on someone who will need time ... they still don't know if they will ever blossom so let's not give them a reason to take a scholarship for year 5. The new graduation transfer rule should help with that, but maybe the staff doesn't want to force anyone out. I dunno.
But few coaches do this. I would probably try it. But it's worth noting we'd only have two scholarships for next year if Bradley was not a senior.
The key word here SF is "almost", programs like Gonzaga have been using it successfully for awhile now and UVA is starting to make use of it as well..
UVA RS'd 2013 Devon Hall a 3* guard on all sites for his 1st year of 13-14.. Last season they RS'd 2014 Jack Salt a 6-11 235 2* center(sound familiar?) from New Zealand for his freshman season.. Also add in that 2106 4* PF recruit Jay Huff a 6-10 180lb kid is being talked about as a RS candidate due to his lack of size..
As I posted earlier in the thread Nova just did it with Bridges.. Jalen Reynolds from Xavier is a RS kid too, same with the Milliken, Zierden & Groselle kids from Creighton.. Michigan RS'd the Levert kid out of HS until he started tearing it up in practice & decided to play him..
I think the main reason it's not done a lot is due to the fact that most kids are physically ready to play CBB unlike CFB but it can be a useful tool in the right circumstances.. Hayes was one of those circumstances imho..
Here's an article written before he even committed to G'town..
www.cbssports.com/collegebasketball/recruiting/eye-on-college-basketball-recruiting/18840080/bradley-hayes-becoming-center-of-attention-in-2012
Over the weekend at the Under Armour Hoop Group Pitt Jam Fest, Hayes was the center of attention on multiple occasions. He didn't get much playing time, though, but did demonstrate some good instincts. Since he's a year younger than most of his grade, Hayes could be the perfect redshirt candidate if decides to stick in 2012.
If you go back thru his recruitment there was some buzz that Hayes would prep for a year out of HS, iirc that's what Donovan wanted him to do but he chose not to when schools offered to take him right away.. Add in the fact that he was young for his class and hurt the summer prior to his freshman year, he should have been RS'd in my view..
I don't buy the excuses of "the player may not want to stay 5 years" or "it takes up a scholarship" either.. If the kid wants to leave after 4 years he can or if the staff wants the scholarship back they can do that too.. Look at the Moses case, how did his medical RS year hurt?
Moses didn't get better and I'm sure it was explained to him he wouldn't see much time in his 5th year so he decided to move on.. No harm, no foul..
On the other hand the staff saw a use for Bowen so he was kept around.. Bowen wasn't great at all last year but he was a contributor who had his moments and I expect the same thing from Hayes this year.. It won't be a shock to me if Hayes averages 5-6ppg & 5+ rpg and if he does that he'd be worth having for a fifth year..
As for Trey he came in with 2 other players who are better than him at PF, plus G'town already had a commitment from Derrickson who's better.. White & Derrickson are going to be @ G'town for awhile & there's a good chance Ike will be here for a couple of more years also, Where will trey's time come from?
I know he's putting in work this offseason and I hope it pays off for him but right now I don't see him beating out the kids in front of him so I would have held him back from that class especially given the fact the staff recruited kids like Dickerson & Rabb for 2015 anyway and the fact that he didn't play much BB coming up..
FWIW a Florida insider on Rivals told me that was the recruiting pitch Donovan made to the Mournings..
To Hoyasaxa2003, you're right there aren't any guarantees in red shirting kids, it's a gamble but there's not much downside to it imho..
