I do not know if this is an epidemic in progress or it is just the by product of the 24 hour news cycle but these events keep making headlines. Below is the video: (View Discretion Advised) Police Officer Michael Slager shooting Walter ScottThere is a chance that Officer Slager may be found Not Guilty of murder.

The rather sizable difference here is the cop is not being shielded from responsibility by the brass, or slapped on the wrist with a paid vacation but rather being charged with murder. That's progress.
Cops should not be able to carry a weapon without a body camera. And the de-activation of body cameras should shift the presumption from innocence to guilt instantly on any officers charged with misconduct or crimes.
It is quite clear that these sorts of things have always happened. The only thing that has changed is now everybody has a camera and a wish to be a youtube hit. Best thing for cops is for this to be made very clear to them by making them wear cameras. Don't want to wear one? OK, I instantly don't trust you to carry a gun and badge then...thanks for the honesty. I think the post office is hiring.

He's, after all, presumed to be innocent. It's also quite possible he'll be found guilty of murder.

Let's not act like that was anything like a forgone conclusion.

Of course the defendant is entitled to a presumption of innocence. However, having viewed the video more than once, I'd be hardpressed to cobble together a legal defense for an officer who shoots a suspect (in a traffic stop) in the back from a substantial distance. How was this officer in fear for his life or serious bodily injury? After 35+ years of practice law (including defending federal law enforceent officers in civil suits), I've learned the perils of predicting an outcome of any trial, civil or criminal. In this case, I'll go out on a limb and predict a plea bargain. The actions of the officer of apparently staging the scene of the shooting by placing his taser near the body, and radioing in that the victim attempted to grab his taser speaks to the mens rea of this officer, i.e., guilty knowledge and intent.

Have you found in the past that "keep quiet" demands work on a message board? I have to imagine this literally always has the opposite effect, ensuring that the person will not "keep quiet," but will respond vigorously.

A seat belt violation for this mother driving her kids in law and order America led to this assault. When this woman wins her lawsuit the cops will not pay a penny of damages. The taxpayers will cover 100% as always. Civil judgments against out-of-control police need to start being paid out of police budgets; either the operating budget or the police pension funds. I don't care which but they've got to start literally paying for their own crimes. Another case of cops surely inducing "resisting arrest" by assaulting somebody and then using the ensuing made up charge to justify kicking the crap out of somebody further. www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-3260527/Shocking-video-shows-moment-mother-pinned-ground-police-officers-repeatedly-punched-face.html
