In the past 13 years (since their national title), Maryland has only made the tournament six times (this year was the first since 2010, and they've only gone 4 times in the last 11). They have not made the Sweet Sixteen since the year after their title. They have DC, better facilities and were coming off a title in 2002 and 5 Sweet Sixteens in 6 years (1998-2003). Turgeon's not a bad coach, but he has one Sweet Sixteen in 15 years (it was at Wichita State). Things are best viewed in context.

It's looking like West Virginia is about to be the Big 12's last hope for a Sweet 16 team. They'll probably snatch the "Biggest Underachiever" headlines from the Big East at least. None of this makes the Big 12 or Big East a bad league. Single elimination can drive you crazy. Oklahoma?

I read that the "luckiest team in the country" has not made it to the second weekend just once in the 13 years Kenpom has used the statistic. The Twerps run of 2 point wins ended against WVU...First time I an recall cheering for a Huggins team.

At the end of the day, most of the sweet 16 teams are the teams that were the top 15-20 teams all year. In a way that makes me feel better because I like our chances to be in that mix next year.
The others in the mix are ones that caught a huge break, like Xavier and UCLA, and strong, physical tourney teams that matched up well, like NC St and MSU. That's very consistent with how I felt about our chances this year. I thought we could make the S16 if we got a break like Xavier or we just played the perfect matchup. Other than that, we were the 20-30th best team in the country.

Besides Wisconsin, the top teams (Ohio St, Michigan,Michigan St, Indiana) were not as talented as in years past. If they had played in the ACC this year, would have had a few more losses. If they end up landing Diamond Stone, watch out. A Trimble/Stone combo next year could be nasty.

Our so-called overseeding didn't help us much - I think we got the strongest 5 seed in Utah, though I'm not sure we get by any of the others, either.

Since I'm still annoyed they got a home game with Providence, I don't mind that much.

Thank you, Huggy Bear and West Virginia.
