Fine, whatever. I should have said privilege and racism? He's wearing a bowtie while chanting a racist song on a party bus - that seems too on the nose to even be a bad guy in a John Hughes movie.

But what does his bowtie or his presence on a bus have to do with the actual issue? I just dislike constant generalizations about the "privileged," as if slamming all white college guys in bowties is somehow more acceptable than insulting any other group of people based on their clothing and family backgrounds. There are enough legitimate reasons to think little of this guy. Why resort to tired stereotypes based on neckwear?

I actually feel sorry for the kids. Hopefully, all will learn and grow from this. If they are lucky, they still have long lives in front of them.

There are certain things that I would hope as a society we would be 100% united on and shaming those who gleefully chant about the ol' American tradition of lynching African-Americans should be one of them. Then again, there are some who could look all day at this website and blame those hanging from nooses for getting all those good people riled up in the first place, so ... withoutsanctuary.org

Never said I didn't think he shouldn't pay, cause I think he should, w/o a doubt. And I suspect that he will. I also hope that realizes how f#*cked it was, and learns from it.

Edited 'em. I'll never in life feel anything for trash like that. Hang 'em from a tree? Man, please. This is the more troubling concern besides spewing out the "N" word. Where does that thought process come from? *sigh* Unfortunately, I have a fairly good sense of where that thought process comes from, having grown up in the Deep South and known more than a few guys who went on to be SAEs (or the equivalent) across the SEC. Although TC's use of "privilege" was poo-pooed earlier in this thread, I do think that privilege has a lot to do with this particular mentality. There are no poor kids among the SAEs; white trash are certainly viewed as having a higher station in life than black folk, but their entry into the gentility is barred just the same. In fact, I would say that privilege is exactly the right construct to use here, because it's a lot more meaningful than any literal translations. Not a single one of those sheltered Millennial boys would actually have the ISIS-like combination of fortitude and fanaticism necessary to ruthlessly lynch someone. It's all a big joke - and they can perceive it as such, see it as just one big joke, precisely because of that privilege. When you've got your pick of jobs at daddy's - or daddy's country club buddy's - firm after graduation, you don't put too much thought and effort into learning how not to be offensive. People alter their behavior around you, not the other way around...because you're better than them (say that last bit with a Frank Underwood accent). Long story short: it is typical youthful irreverence - you can turn anything into a joke at that age (which is ok, as far as it goes...) - combined with a sense of superiority that doesn't just flout conventions of decency, but relishes doing so. It's the same attitude, though expressed in a very different context, that made the "7th Floor Crew" song possible.

I brought up privilege not so much because I wanted to stereotype these kids all as privileged - even though they probably are - but because in his apology, which I doubt he wrote, he's pretty much admitting to it. If you are going to start quoting "men for others" you are admitting that you are in a position of privilege whether through education or through wealth or through power and that you should be working to diminish your own privilege, live more simply, and change whatever structures in society are causing injustice. SAE is basically the antithesis of that. onlineministries.creighton.edu/CollaborativeMinistry/men-for-others.html

Who was driving the bus? Was it a minority? He should have stepped on the brakes just a little.
