I found it to be a sad story and still don't understand leaving Maquette for VT. Even with his JUCO train he is going to struggle establishing VT into a basketball power in the ACC.

Buzz must have been (1) very unhappy at Marquette, (2) concerned with the direction in which the school and the conference were headed, and (3) convinced that a move to a school in an "established" conference was in his best long-term interest. There were rumors, after he left MU, that the administration was at odds with him and that he was on "thin ice," although those rumors may well be unfounded. I wonder whether Buzz, as a southerner, just did not feel comfortable in Milwaukee, and was happy to go to a non-Northern institution.
He is now at a school where football is king, and where basketball will never be THE sport. When was the last time that the Hokies were relevant, hoops-wise? They never were when Virginia Tech was in the Big East. They won't be in the ACC either. I hope he is sure that his compensation will justify being cannon-fodder. It will be difficult for him to generate a winning record at VT, and I don't see another P5 john off in the horizon for Buzz if things remain as they likely will in Blacksburg.
