Didn't take long. Reports are out indicating that Arizona State has offered its head coaching job (which just opened up today with the dismissal of Herb Sendek) to Duke assistant coach Jeff Capel. Capel was fired after the 2013-2014 season by Appalachian State. Not sure how failing at a lower level job, like AppState, makes one qualified for the Pac 12. Earlier rumors had Memphis's Josh Pastner in the running for the ASU job. Jeff Capel is the former VCU/Oklahoma coach who is now a Duke assistant. Jason Capel is the former coach at App. State.

Will be interesting to see what Hewitt does next. He was a rising star in the Siena/early Ga. Tech days. Given that he's local, he'd be an interesting guy to add as an experienced bench coach that probably wouldn't cost much since he's already made his money. Gotta think JT3 and Hewitt have a good relationship since the Hoyas have played preseason games against George Mason while Hewitt was coaching the Patriots. Late to the party here, but I was surprised to see how Hewitt has fallen off. He most definitely was a rising star a while back.

I guess maybe sometimes an unsuccessful name coach is more attractive than a successful unknown, or even a moderately successful somewhat familiar name.

A lot of smoke/speculation over at johnnyjungle.com, the St. John's forum, as to SJU potentially buying out the final year of Steve Lavin's contract. Something on which to keep an eye.

When we go to UNC-Charlotte next year, Mark Price will be the coach....
That's got to be a "hire a celebrity to get fannies in seats" sort of move because he's, to my knowledge, never been a head coach at any level. He was a collegiate assistant for a whopping one year, so there's no track record as a collegiate coach either in Xs and Os or in recruiting. He has been an assistant in the NBA for a number of years.
Obviously, he may well be terrific. It's just an interesting move for a program that -- while not a power by any stretch -- competes in a top ten league.

Price will be the next Charlotte coach, according to ESPN and the Charlotte Observer. If and when the school and/or Price confirms the same, I'll update the coaching carousel list.
It is an interesting hire for the 49ers; Price has been an assistant NBA coach for the Hornets, so he does have some experience. There's another Hornet assistant coach with much more experience, whom we all remember very well, for whom the head coaching phone call has yet to be made. Maybe someday.

ESPN is reporting that Eric Musselman, an assistant coach at LSU, will be the next head coach at Nevada; the Board of Regents is scheduled to meet Thursday to approve the proposed hiring. Musselman had been rumored to be in line for the head coaching job at San Diego (his alma mater), but took his name out of consideration a few days ago.

The price tag for Dayton's Archie Miller just went up exponentially. The school has announced that he has signed a contract extension through the 2022 season. It won't necessarily stop him from leaving for a higher-profile job, but it certainly raises the bar for compensation in any new deal.

Is it just me, or doesn't Buzz Williams look tailor-made for the Tennessee position?
