Multiple outlets are now reporting that Billy Donovan has decided to leave Florida and instead take the head coaching job with the NBA's Oklahoma City Thunder. I'll update the coaching carousel when it is official.

I keep seeing Anthony Grant as a potential hire, but after his Alabama gig, I have a hard time believing UF would choose him over everyone else. Archie Miller and Gregg Marshall already have gotten big $$ extensions this year, so I could see them turning UF down--who else could they go after?

Par Forde's doom-and-gloom Yahoo article is ridiculously bad. Does Donovan leaving suck for UF? Sure. But painting it as some near-catastrophic event for a "wobbly sport he is leaving behind" just smacks of a writer who has nothing to write about in the off-season, so he needs to make up some issues. Oh no, successful college coaches are getting old and some of the good young ones want to go make huge money in the NBA! Wow, that's crazy and really really bad. I sure hope college basketball can survive.

It looks like Chris Mack is on the short list to replace Billy Donovan at Florida. That would be a tough loss for Xavier and the Big East if he left. Archie Miller seems to be the other leading candidate.

Minnesota's Richard Pitino is reportedly also on the "short list."
Not surprised that Mack is under consideration at Florida; at some point, a Power 5 program will throw enough money in front of him to convince him to leave his home and Alma Mater. Not sure, though, if Florida would be the right fit for him.
Xavier has had many exceptional coaches come through its program (Pete Gillen, Skip Prosser, Thad Motta, Sean Miller), move on to a bigger program, and they always seem to attract a very capable replacement. While losing Mack (if it happens) would be a hit to both XU and the Big East, I would e shocked if they didn't find a new coach to keep the program chugging right along without a hiccup.

Looks like another college head coaching opening will appear shortly. Numerous reports abound that the NBA's Chicago Bulls are negotiating a five-year contract with Iowa State's Fred Hoiberg, to have him succeed Tom Thibodeau. The same sources indicate that the deal should be finalized by the middle of next week.
