Watching Butler a ton this year, I can safely say that Roosevelt Jones either has an inability to drive with his left or just has an aversion to it. It would be nice if we recognized that in this game before his final shot attempt. He has only has two moves, but that semi-pull-up shot-put shot is awfully effective. A win at Butler will go a long way for a lot of reasons. Agreed. Jones cannot go left and is not a perimeter threat. Need to play him accordingly and put someone on him who has the ability to stick with him on his drives...presumably jabril, hop, or Bowen. Think he is too crafty for the freshman to handle. Would like to think we gameplan accordingly for him and Dunham-- we will see....

Looking at the stats from the home game vs Butler, I noted that Chrabascz only had 3 pts. in 31 minutes. Seems like Roosevelt Jones, Dunham and Martin should be our main focus, even if Chrabascz is back. Expect a big game from DSR, our "Indy" guy, as well as Bril and Copeland who scored 10 pts. each. Smith and Hopkins had 10 and 8 pts. respectively and we pulled out a close game, 61 - 59. Bril was big in that game, defensively, and we have to bring that same intensity on the road. Need this win. Josh has to show up and we must limit TO's and for heaven's sake, they must make their free-throws.

So funny that so many of us couch potatoes, noticed that Jones goes right EVERY time. In the YMCA, the only folks who notice those tendencies are old guys who need every advantage they can find (yes.. speaking personally here.) But was so upset that noone apparently bothered to tell our defenders in a major D1 game. Some guys are so good, even going one way, that they are hard to stop, and I suspect Jones is one of those guys. But most definitely, we gotta make it harder on him by forcing him to go left.

Or we focused so hard on shutting down Dunham from the outside after the first half that those drives were what was left.

This would be a very surprising win if we got it. I think ultimately the game means little in terms of the big picture. Would like to see a reduction in turnovers, a return to early season Josh Smith, and some decent shooting from the freshmen, but the result of the game itself isn't all that important.

Although unlikely it's possible that we face this Butler team 5 times this season. That would have to be some kind of record if that happens.

I actually think we'll get this win. And then our fan base will go crazy again talking about deep March runs. As for the earlier TJI question about whether or not we are satisfied with this team's performance I'm gonna go with yes. Four freshman coming in and upperclassmen that missed out on the tournament last year? Last time JT3 was in this position was his first season as head coach and his team missed the tourney that year. Before this season I said making the tourney should be the goal with this group, and it looks like we're there-- even if we hobble in. With this team, I've learned pretty much every game is a 50-50 game. So the goal now should be to win 1 game in the NCAAs. By that math, getting to the Sweet 16 is a 25 percent chance which seems about right....

I like your math, Denny, in terms of getting to the Sweet 16...but am definitely not gonna bet the house on it. I think the bar has been lowered enough for most of us, that one win in the Dance will send us to the offseason in a good mood.

Hopkins isn't a phenomenal man defender, but if I was imagining a player whose game would normally be pretty effective but for whom Hopkins is a matchup nightmare, it's Chrabascz. Hopkins is mobile enough to move away from the basket with him and keep him from driving, and big enough that Chrabascz's inside game won't be effective. Chrabascz came close to singlehandedly carrying a bad Butler team to a win at the Verizon Center last year when Hopkins was in foul trouble.

And Hop's effort against him at VC this year was light years ahead of how he played him in DC last year and in the Bahamas in November. This is going to sound crazy, but I think Hop might have more to do with the outcome tomorrow than Josh because of his defensive mobility.

I hope the fellas prepare themselves mentally for the way this game is likely to be called by the refs. Another senior night, another road game and the refs will be sure not to give the Hoyas any benefit of the doubt tomorrow. Josh needs to understand this prior to the game and expect to get some crappy calls against him and just play through it. Same for Hopkins. I really hope Copeland can bring his A game, we will need it to win this one.

Word on the Butler forum (butlerhoops.com) is that Andrew Chrabascz practiced today for the first time since his surgery, and that a decision as to whether he will play tomorrow night will be made later this afternoon.

Well that was unexpected. He'll be back by March 3rd. That's just the way it works. Might as well accept it. He's lucky they're playing us a little over 2 weeks from his injury, otherwise it'd probably take a lot longer to heal. Not.

Butler would be the first quality road win of season. Good a time as any to get it.
Really hope to see a good game from LJ - I don't think this is true, but it seems like he hasn't had a good game in 2015. I'd like to see Paul get more PT and see if he can recapture that midrange game that shone through in first half of season.
Don't let Smith hurt us in this game. Let's see how he comes out, but I'd pivot quickly to MH at 5 if he isn't up for challenge. I'm trying awfully hard not to be too negative on Josh Smith but he makes it very difficult sometimes. It is a very scary proposition to stake any success on his performance because while the offense hums when Josh is playing motivated and smart, that occurs too infrequently to expect any type of consistent returns. Negativity aside, I'd argue that given his checkered history, he has performed as was (or should have been) expected when news broke that he was transferring to Georgetown. Nothing in his history at the college level indicated that he was going all of a sudden turn into a consistent force in the paint.
Hope for the best from here on out, but would be happy with a win over a No. 10/11 seed followed by a hard-fought loss to a No. 2/3 seed. Anything else gravy.

Smith played 24 minutes, and Hopkins played 19 minutes, in the first game against Butler. Those numbers were reversed in the second game in DC. Combined, they outplayed Chrabascz and his backup, Austin Etherington, in both games.
In the Paradise Jam game, Chrabacsz played 28 minutes and scored 9 points (4-11 from the field, 0-2 from three point range and 1-2 from the line), with only two defensive rebounds, three assists, one steal, one turnover, and three fouls; Etherington played 12 minutes and did not score (0-1 from the field), with one defensive rebound, one turnover and two fouls. Comparatively, Smith played 24 minutes an scored 7 points (3-7 from the field, 1-5 from the line), with nine rebounds (three offensive), two assists, one block, three turnovers and four fouls, and Hopkins played 19 minutes and scored 3 points (1-5 from the field and 1-2 from the line), with six rebounds (three offensive), three turnovers and four fouls. The Hoya centers outscored the Butler centers and controlled the boards; the only shortcoming was in turnovers.
In the DC game, Chrabascz played 31 minutes and scored 3 points (0-4 from the field, 0-2 from three-point range, 3-4 from the line), with six rebounds (none offensive), one assist, one steal and two fouls, and Etherington played 8 minutes and scored 2 points (0-1 from the field, 2-2 from the line), four rebounds (two offensive), one assist, one turnover and three fouls. Comparatively, Smith played 19 minutes and scored 10 points (3-5 from the field, 4-6 from the line) with four rebounds (two offensive), one assist, two turnovers and three fouls, and Hopkins played 24 minutes and scored 8 points (4-9 from the field) with eight rebounds (two offensive), one assist, one steal, three blocks, one turnover and one foul. Again, the Hoya centers outscored the Butler centers and controlled the boards.
I don't believe that we will lose this game based upon Chrabascz and Etherington outplaying Smith and Hopkins; it hasn't happened in two games so far, and even if Chrasbascz is able to play, it is unlikely he will see a great deal of playing time. If Butler is hitting the three point shot and if we can't hold Roosevelt Jones down to his usual output, we'll have big trouble. If only one of those two happens, we can win. It will be tough. . .another senior night in a location with a big home court advantage.

The more I think about this one -- a road game at a tough place to play against a good team on Senior Night -- the more I think those of you who are holding out some hope for a win are, to put it nicely, quite optimistic. I am just hoping that it is not a blowout. I would, of course, be ecstatic if I am wrong.

Butler head coach Chris Holtmann told Channel 13 in Indianapolis today that he expects Chrabascz to get "some playing time" tomorrow against the Hoyas.
