People (aside from ARod) still listen to Fat Boy Francesa? Well, I'll be.

I always thought the benefit to advertisers was that the audience for college bball is a great demographic. Overwhelmingly college educated, good mix of younger and older, wealthier. But I have to admit watching Foxsports ads for UFC makes me question our culture. Its illegal to have dogs or chickens fight but perfectly legal for grown men - and women - to beat their brains out in glorified bar fights. Hello??

As the number of sports television and streaming options has increased significantly with the addition of programming from CBS Sports, NBC Sports and Fox, not to mention the regional networks like Root, Big 10, PAC 12 and the SEC network, the overall quality of the announcing has suffered. I watch at least 7-8 college basketball games a week and everyone is experiencing a decrease in quality. ESPN is rolling out some announcers on its ESPN 3 broadcasts who have little familiarity with the teams on the floor of the conference rivalries. It is really just the law of supply and demand and right now the demand is greater than the supply.

I think there is opportunity being missed to tout the league. ESPN sells the hell out of its own stuff on Sportscaster. FS Live needs to do more with the Big East in terms of highlights and everything else. FS1 doesn't have buyer's remorse. What the hell else were they supposed to show on weeknights in February? Somebody wants the live programming. I agree with this. They probably should be trying to leapfrog ESPN by cutting and distributing highlights through the non-traditional media that actually hits their target demo like youtube, vine, instagram and is super conducive to smash cut highlights. Trying to create a product to compete with sportscenter is like trying to create a better radio show...better to focus on the media of today if not tomorrow.

Who would want to listen to Francesa? Wouldn't you rather watch real sports or listen to someone who actually knows something about them?

One major fact speaks to both the ratings for CBB games and the quality of the announcing - the sheer number of games being broadcast. Last Saturday, 53 college basketball games were broadcast either on network TV, cable TV or Internet Stream. The ESPN Family of Networks (TM) alone accounted for 45 of them! There simply aren't enough talented - or seasoned - announcers for all those games. As we have seen, many are obviously learning on the job.
FS1, which is a brand new cable channel, is a long way from getting the same numbers as and established network like CBS. But in fairness, the SJU-XU game was played on Saturday afternoon, when there were probably 8-10 other games being broadcast simultaneously. The Sunday WU-UI game had that timeslot all to itself - plus it was on network television. I had that game on myself simply because it was my only option. If those two games swapped networks and timeslots, I'd bet the numbers would likely have flip-flopped as well.
To be successful, FS1 needs to make itself part of the daily routine of sports fans. That is going to be incredibly hard given the power and reach of ESPN and the networks. I can't stand ESPN, but when I turn on the TV I scroll to 570 (on FiOS) and see what's on, just out of habit. Even sports bars and restaurants don't often have any TVs tuned into FS1 by default, like they do for the ESPN or regional sports channels. It's going to be a long process if FS1 is ever to become a real challenge to ESPN. Short of getting weekday NFL rights, I am not sure how they can ever make themselves a player - CBB alone is not going to ever move the needle.

Most hotels don't get FS1, etc. That's one problem. But the other remains that for all of the talk about new and young and cool and fresh FS1 was going to be, it has failed miserably to make any effort to market the Big East, which would be to its own benefit. Of course it doesn't help here that their studios are in Los Angeles.

The rarely listen to the announcers, so it doesn't bother me.. The picture quality is lacking, compared to some of the other HD channels though..

I like Rob Stone in the studio. And Ben Howland is also decent there. Kevin O'Neill and Austin Croshere do nothing for me, though.

Also: Fox's college basketball web and social media presence is laughable. I have no idea who is the most prominent Fox Sports journalist following college hoops. Fox hasn't even tried at all in that arena.

Know one cares about grammar either. Yeah so im not the best typer id admit. Also my ipad will not make a capital i for some reason.. And yes i forgot the "one" because i have a 15 mo old that was screaming and i really could not go back and correct it. im very sorry if my post bothered you that much that you had to point out the poor grammar. Actually from reading your posts in the past i honestly dont think very highly of your style on here. ill just leave it there, i really dont want to get into a big back and forth with you. There's bad grammar, and then there is near incomprehensible, which is what your post was. [/typed while dealing with two five-week-olds]

Fox hasn't even tried at all in that arena. I think it is Stewart Mandel, best known for spending years covering college football for SI. Now suddenly he is putting brackets together. Fox has done a lousy job with branding certain talent as their go-to guy for particular sports. They've made no emphasis whatever on actual journalism outside of the sports (baseball, football) where they already had somebody.

I think we can safely say that there's something wrong with people who live in the New York metro area Whats wrong with all you people. Mike Francesa is the gold standard of Sports Talk. Mike and the Mad Dog revolutionized sports talk radio. Since going on his own and parting with dog the show is better than ever. The guy has been in drive time since the late 1980's, anyone that can hold the same job and keep the ratings as high as he has thru more than one generation of fans really should be commended. True his style is not for everyone, hes short with callers and borderline rude but hes NY and thats his style, maybe DC cant handle it..

Personally, I would prefer to see Howland and/or O'Neill doing color work (O'Neill did this last year) rather than in the studio.

I think most of the board considers "gold standard of Sports Talk" an honor on par with "Valedictorian at Syracuse."

I just think radio shows on TV are dumb unless they are on some time from 1am-8am.

I haven't listened to sport talk radio on purpose in a really, really long time. And there is literally no reason I can think of why anyone outside of the NYC metro area would ever listen to, let alone watch, a New York sports talk radio show.
