I know that NCAA, university, and team rules will continue to prohibit pot smoking.
Still, you have to think this will be a positive for recruiting -- albeit one the staff can't mention in their pitches to prospects.
Thoughts?

If legal weed is the deciding factor for any recruit I'm not sure I want that guy on the team.

If you consider that the average top 100 kid is pretty well consumed with making it to the league, I'd say it's probably around #998 in reasons to commit to a program.
If I'm missing considerable sarcasm here, then - yes, this will help recruiting. Our new offense will be puff, puff, pass... shoot.

This will be a good test of how well the Jesuits taught us to distinguish between descriptive and normative judgments.

In the offseason, if a player wants to smoke a time or two to help relax, I'm fine with that. In season, hey its your career.
As far as it being a plus for recruiting, I doubt it will matter to any of the high-major. We haven't seen the Washington or Colorado schools becoming stoner powerhouses.
BTW, we're on a forum guys, we can have outlandish discussions. Nothing wrong with bringing this thought here, especially since it is a subject that will effect Georgetown.

Other than the possibility of a positive test, the suggestion that smoking weed interferes with success in the league flies in the face of massive evidence that many great players smoke copiously. Just sayin

Re: university and team rules continuing to forbid it, I'd actually be interested if the University makes any clarification on this. The drug policy only states "University policy strictly forbids the illegal/unauthorized possession, use, transfer and/or sale of drugs or controlled substances." It's legal on a local level but still illegal on a federal level, but I'm guessing the buzz around campus is that it is "legal." The law is for 21+ only, so that keeps possession illegal for most freshmen and sophomores and younger juniors, who are most of the living on campus population. My recollection of what sort of electronics are allowable in campus housing would already forbid any sort of reasonable growing operation.
I'd be interested to see what the administration sends out to students because I think it calls for clarification, and more interested in what reading isn't explicitly forbidden (e.g. if they forbid possession "in campus housing" I would take that as a tacit approval that an off-campus possession incident wouldn't become a student conduct incident).
All that said, from what I heard of disciplinary incidents involving drugs, it wouldn't surprise me if the administration takes a ridiculous hard line.
As far as team rules, does anyone actually have any concept of what the team rules are? This comes up every so often (e.g. Smith's suspension last year, any of several incidents with Greg Whittington) and there's all these assumptions about what they are. There's no reason for team rules against recreational drugs beyond the code of conduct that applies to any other student. If these kids want to smoke pot and play NBA 2K15 to unwind from practice and schoolwork, I do not care at all.

Let's not forget we're the school that had the "meth lab" in a freshman dorm and a sophomore who made ricin. I think a thriving grow operation is well within our reach.

These guys shouldn't be smoking up while at Georgetown. Once they are pros they can do all the weed, blow and hookers they want.

Instead of a picture of a deflated basketball, we can use a picture of a roach clip, followed by the words, "all right, all right, all right."

Girls will always be a bigger factor than the availability or legality of weed. And, no offense, but Georgetown lags behind some of our competition in that regard.

And maybe the change in law will give Howard an edge with recruiting the most talented female students. When we start getting McDonald's All-Americans and winning national titles again in the coming years, I'm going to be bumping this thread....
