Man, the wheels have really fallen off for the Hoosiers. What the heck are they doing? They have some talent.

VCU is really leaking oil down the stretch. No Briante Weber. He is the heart and soul of that team. VCU isn't going anywhere without him easy pick to lose 1st round.

VCU is really leaking oil down the stretch. Don't forget that VCU's pressure defense is now missing an important part -- guard Briante Weber, who was closing in on the NCAA's Division 1 career steals record before his season ending knee injury.

I'm not saying they are good, but their RPI doesn't tell the whole story. The went to college park and lost by one and took MSU to overtime on the road. They also lost to Ohio St. by only two. They haven't closed games out, which is why their RPI isn't better, but they have actually been competitive this year.

They haven't closed games out, which is why their RPI isn't better, but they have actually been competitive this year. The fallacy that Northwestern is pretty good is a media (primarily ESPN) driven push to support ex-Dukie Chris Collins. NW is 14-14 on the year, now at RPI #107 after last night's victory over Indiana, which is NW's only top 50 RPI win of the season. They only have 2 wins over RPI teams ranked 50-100 (at home vs. Iowa and on the road vs. RPI #95 Minnesota). NW has lost by 13 at home to Central Michigan, by 8 at home to a brutal Georgia Tech team that's about to have their coach fired, and by 16 at RPI #124 Nebraska. Under Bill Carmody, NW routinely had better teams than what Collins has done. Last year, NW was 14-19, RPI #123. This year, in a weaker Big Ten, NW is 14-14, RPI #107. Comparatively, in 2011-2012 under Carmody, NW was 18-13, RPI #60. In 2010-2011, NW was 16-11, RPI #90. Collins has been a lot of hype and very little in the way of results so far in his tenure at Northwestern.

I'm not particularly enamored by the RPI as a measuring tool. Your RPI analysis cuts both ways. The fact that the Big Ten is down this year has an impact on their RPI this year. Having watched Northwestern several times (I don't know why you would assume that I have fallen for some media fallacy), I have been impressed by their tenacity in some games. From what I've SEEN, they've played more inspired basketball than some of the lower tier Big East teams.

Carmody had better teams and it was often a piece of bad luck that kept them from getting over the hump -- one year their best returning player decided to quit basketball. Not transfer, but quit. It'd be like if DSR decided he wanted to focus exclusively on classes next year.
Collins has shown he's not a miracle worker or even better than Carmody on doing more with less. But in his defense a bit, they are a very young team with not a ton of talent. The freshman class doesn't look awful and I think he has some recruits coming in.
Using RPI to judge opponents is pretty useless when there are better metrics. Iowa's ranked 27 in Pomeroy; Indiana 46 and Minnesota 60. This is a nice little win streak for them. Northwestern is still ranked 99th, though.

Kind of an odd thing to go on a rant over. Collins stole Hoyaboya's girlfriend?
