I was thinking "when was the last time these teams played in the Garden this late in the year with both headed to the tourney?" I think the answer is the 1992 BET Semis.
2011 is the only year in between where both made it and that game was in early January.
Crazy to think it's been that long.

Apparently St. John's Students will be on Spring break for our game. Shouldn't have too big of an effect since despite adding dorms St. John's is still mostly a commuter school.

True, but this is no doubt their biggest game and senior day, like you said. Not to mention, we, of course, embarrassed them last week. They are going to come out with a ton of intensity and energy. Need to weather that and stay disciplined. Good test for us.

Found it interesting watching St. Johns beat Xavier last night, after watching us soundly beat them. Amazing how we cannot even play a close game with Xavier. I know its obvious, but its still amazing how important matchups are in bball.

St. John's loves to run. They have no patience in the half court game. So don't turn the ball over, don't miss a lot of shots and make them work for every score and usually with about 10 minutes left in the game they will collapse. Especially if we are playing tough defense and work on Harrison. Get in his head and he will do some really ridiculous things later in the game.
Reason we can beat St. John's and not Xavier is Xavier is so much better coached and so much more comfortable playing our style of game. They don't need to score a lot in transition and they don't panic when they get down 6-8 points late in the game.
I posted earlier that I hoped St. John's would lose last night because I hate to see them represent BE in NCAA tourney. Point made that we should want as many BE teams in the tourney as possible. While it looks great to have more teams in the tourney it looks even better if the teams we get in do well. Granted coming from a Hoya fan this sounds ridiculous. But I'd rather have 5 good teams (Nova, Providence, Butler, Xavier and us) than have St. John's and/or Seton Hall get in and stink up the joint. Face it, only those 5 have a chance to make it to the sweet 16 and probably only Nova has a prayer of going to the final four. Yes miracles can happen and maybe St. Johns gets a good seeding and suddenly learns how to play as a team. But I hate to have to pull for them in the tourney just because they represent the BE.

Cinderellas come from anywhere (well, mostly directional schools). But to be Cinderellas, they first need to make the tournament. Who knows if Harrison cannot miss in March and they go in a long run? Let's get as many BE schools as possible and who know what will happen from there. Plus, the BE continues to get the recognition it deserves.

As you note, that 3rd paragraph is embarassingly ridiculous coming from a Hoya fan in 2015. Embarrassingly ridiculous and, more importantly, unintelligible and devoid of common sense. Adding a sixth team that may "stink up the joint" whatever that means has no bearing on the probability of the remaining five teams' success in the tournament. Fact is, the BE and its resident teams want to be able to utilize the talking point, "60% of teams qualified for the NCAAT" - this is important for recruits, for national exposure, and probably even ticket sales. In case you didn't notice, St. John's was whupping Duke for a while and almost ruined Hypocritzki's 1000th. They've got more than enough talent to make the noise in a single-elimination tournament.

The more teams in, the more likely it is that more go through to the second (i.e. "third") round, and the more that get there, the more likely it is that more teams get to the second weekend. St. John's can beat anyone in a one-off situation and could certainly get hot and win two games in three days. What you want for "national recognition" is for the entire week leading up to the second weekend to have the discussion include a note of how many BE teams remain. Three would be terrific; four would be stupendous; five would be almost too much to hope for. At any of those numbers -- even if it's three -- ESPN couldn't ignore it, try as they might. No conference had more than three last year. We want as many conference teams in as possible.

Right now, the bracket matrix has St. John's as a 10 seed, which would have them facing a Providence/San Diego St. / OK State caliber team. They can easily win that game (they have two wins over Providence already). Then, maybe they get lucky with a 2-15 seed upset, maybe they just have a really good game and then, viola, they're in the Sweet Sixteen. Worst case scenario, they lose to a higher seeded team and no one remembers much about them, except the Big East (and SJU) get to use their tourney berth in recruiting / marketing

Okay, I hate St. John's more than I love the BE. I just hate to see a team with so much talent yet so little idea of how to play the game be rewarded with an NCAA tourney berth. The Duke game is the perfect example of why I hate them and why they don't deserve to be in the tourney. A complete meltdown in the last 10 minutes. They blew a chance to promote the BE and prove they are legit. Unless they win out (including beating us of course) and go to the BE final they don't deserve a shot at a national title and I hope the tourney selection committee recognizes this. Remember this team lost to Creighton and DePaul.

Hey..he is entitled to hate a conference team. I HATE, Cuse, period. Never, ever, wanted to see them succeed, even if it made the Big East look good.

The Boeheim Exception still applies, even in the new "root for everyone" Big East. If he wants to use it on SJU, that's allowed. ndnation.com/boards/showpost.php?b=faq;pid=3;d=this

Apparently, I didn't find drquigley's post as disturbing as some others. I mean, I get his point. On the other hand, rather than SJU, the way Xavier is playing, as long as they are not playing the Hoyas they look to be the BE team most likely to flame out early with a bad loss.
