THe "Thanks Coach Lavin, Good Luck" thread on the johnnyjungle.com website, the St. John's forum, is now up to 35 pages! I get the sense they'd happily pay his moving expenses to get him out of town. Best line, coming in a discussion in which it is grudgingly acknowledged that VCU's Shaka Smart isn't leaving to go to Jamaica, Queens: "I'd settle for Chaka Khan right now."

It's all speculation at this point but I'd love to see Gregg Marshall take over a Big East team.

I'll wait to see if the Hoyas can beat SJ before grabbing my fork.

I'll wait to see if the Hoyas can beat SJ before grabbing my fork. Agreed. Is anyone really 100% sure that the Johnnies are done? Three of the next 4 at home for a desperate team. They could easily show up in DC 6-6 with renewed confidence.

The losses are definitely an issue for Lavin, but the nail in his coffin is the putrid recruiting. He was supposed to be a great salesman of a historically strong program, but he cannot recruit the tri-state area. Few if anyone of consequence is on that roster from the NYC metro. SHU is recruiting the tristate much better at SJU's expense. We even pulled Govan right out of Queens beneath their noses.
They go 5 deep right now, Lavin has not even recruited enough players for his roster, much less the 4 star guys they hoped he would land. Lavin is done, no doubt about it. Regardless of who is there, next season will be a really bad one for SJU, they have no players.
I am thinking Ben Howland gets the job. I do not think he is working for FS1 by conincidence, he wants in on this league. He would be a good get for SJU as well.

I'd rather see South Carolina continue to sink so we have another shot at PJ Dozier, crosses fingers.

While I don't love the fact that Howland had a significant downfall at UCLA, I would tend to agree. Howland is a proven recruiter (much more so than Lavin) and he had shown he can win. Perhaps the smaller environment at St. John's would help to keep in check some of the issues that arose at UCLA.

St. Johns should take a serious look at Tim Cluess from Iona..
He's a NYC guy thru & thru and he's well respected by NY/NJ high schools & aau programs.. Recruiting the tri-state won't be an issue for him
If not him get one of the Hurley's..

I am sure Steve Alford will be available in about 5 years when Howland doesn't work out, either. St. John's will be living the Lefty Driesell dream. Truthfully, Howland seemed to recruit NYC pretty well at Pitt, especially for a guy whose prior experience was all out west.

Would like to see the johnnies get a young guy with success at the mid-major level, who could bring some energy, excitement and stability to that mess. NYC and the Big East should be recruiting plusses; spearheading the return to prominence of the St. John's name should also help bring in some solid 4-year guys. Hope they can get it right - a strong SJU program helps lift the Big East brand.

UCLA's new slogan to lure coaches could be "Come to UCLA - we'll prepare you to coach at St. John's."

I wonder if St. John's would consider Howland, based upon his age. He is 57 years old, which would make him the second oldest coach in the Big East. Oliver Purnell is 61, followed by Jay Wright (53), Steve Lavin and Greg McDermott (50), JT3 (48), Ed Cooley and Chris Mack (45), Chris Holtmann (43), Kevin Willard (39) and Steve Wojochiechowski (38). I think that St. John's would look for a younger coach with the idea that, due to present recruiting inadequacies, this will be a multi-year rebuilding process. Remember that although Purnell is 61, this is his sixth year at DePaul, so he was already two years younger than Howland when he was hired. I'd think that Tim Cluess (Iona), Danny Hurley (Rhode Island) and Bobby Hurley (Buffalo) will be strong candidates, along with (maybe) Steve Masiello (Manhattan).

Here's a dose of negativity for this thread: Assuming Obekpa (probably a second round pick) and Jordan (not very interested in school) leave with Lavin, this team is totally bereft of talent. It's a program that produced most of its success 30 years ago in a city that produced its most notable basketball talents before then. This is an enormous rebuild and a huge uphill battle, and I'm failing to see why it's a desirable job. You can call Donovan, Smart, Archie Miller, Gregg Marshall, etc. like they suggested on the Johnny Jungle thread, but that's going nowhere. Howland wouldn't be terrible but that that feels a lot like a slightly improved version of Purnell to DePaul. It's unlikely Mark Jackson's interested and his reputation at Golden State was unwilling to hire good assistants and very aloof, which doesn't exactly lend itself to recruiting success. Danny Hurley turned down Rutgers two years ago, so I don't even think there's a guarantee he's interested.
