How would a St. Johns W against Duke help the overall conference RPI for those in the RPI nerd game? BE is #2 in the conference RPI behind the B12 0.5966 to 0.5902. We have 2 OOC games left St. John's vs. Duke (8) and Xavier @ Cinci(33). Winning would probably be enough to push us ahead to #1. B12 has no more OOC games left.

Yes, assuming Duke and Cincy generally maintain or improve their spots after those games. And being first would be huge (especially since the B12 can't use the "we play a true round robin and no one else does" line against us like they can against everyone else). To me, though, the biggest issue would be a perception boost, which we are still fighting despite the ranking. If the eighth team in the BE (by current standings) can take down Duke in the middle of the conference schedule, it would be big.

Unfortunately, based upon what I have seen from St. John's this season, and especially based upon what I saw last night from them, I have absolutely no confidence in their being able to hang in there with Duke. In a game in which the middle of the Marquette zone was open for exploitation, the Johnnies settled again and again for long and errant three-point shot attempts (especially Harrison). Ugly, ugly, ugly. It was not until that dapper coach, Steve Lavin, told his players at a time out in the second half "No More Threes!" that SJU took control of a game that they should have put away much earlier. Duke's man-to-man (yes, I think that Coach K will not play zone in this game) will frustrate this undisciplined team very early.
It is nice to dream that St. John's can win this game, and yes, I'd love to be wrong, but I can't see it happening. I'd have much, much more faith in Butler against Duke, or Seton Hall against Duke. Not St. John's.

Does Lavin need a Duke win to save his job? The way they're going, they aren't going to make the NCAAs without it, and he keeps failing to meet expectations up there.

The DePaul win is starting to look really good. Up 8pts with 17 mins left.

Another day and more proof there are no easy games in the Big East. Depaul's resume just keeps getting better.

Of course Gottlieb tweeted that DePaul being in first place is proof that the conference isn't that good.
