And a very happy and healthy new year to you. To me, Georgetown, the oldest Catholic university in the nation, has consistently been on the cutting edge of Catholic values, which has permitted it to remain vibrant over the past centuries. Today is no different. Methinks the conservative wing of the alumni in the 1880s would have been aghast had it been more widely publicized that the University's president was of mixed-race heritage. Now, of course, it is a point of pride for the school, as it should be. And a (serious) question: one of the activities mentioned in the article is "pole dancing." You may be morally opposed to this activity, to its teaching at Georgetown, or to the context in which it is most widely used, but many women take classes in it as a fitness activity, and of course, to the extent there is an erotic component to it (as generally there is), many women utilize the eroticism as an aid within their marriages, which of course is that most Catholic of institutions. That is all comment. My question: Where in Catholic theology or values is there any opposition to "pole dancing?" It seems as though this is an instance of personal conservative values (shared among a larger conservative group) being hijacked in the name of "Catholic" values. The personal viewpoint is perfectly fine, of course, but that doesn't make it Catholic or, more to the point, an example of the school's loss of Catholic values. |

Maybe I'm overreacting, but framing this as "Catholic Identity Abuse" really seems like a concerted attempt to slime organizations who don't follow their dogma by conflating them with the sexual abuse scandals in the Catholic Church. The term seems to appear quite frequently though - it's in the title, it appears twice in the article, and it's tagged under the category of "Catholic Identity Abuse".

I thought the same when I read this piece- the language is tortured and one had to re-read a few times to try to understand what "abuse" they were talking about. The word "abuse" in this context, incorrectly used as it is, reeks of propaganda and instantly alerts the reader that the source is unambiguously an advocate rather than a reporter. I cease listening to any argument as soon as I start hearing trigger words meant to appeal to emotion rather than intellect.

There really was no narrative to their story other than Georgetown has people speak that they didn't like and gays exist. Let's not pretend this was a story about DeGioia's salary whatsoever, they'd still be complaining if he was the lowest paid College President and our average professor made minimum wage.

It's so apparent so much of the blowback is those dudes who never outgrew the sixth grade cooties stage while the rest of us realized we'd rather spend time with the ladies. The best part is when he argues that icky women confused the manly men into wanting to diddle little boys. It's like the garden of eden all over again!

"More sad news"? I'll tell you what is more sad news about GU. Your post. What a bunch of totally contrived, ideological nonsense. The stated reason for asking to edit the video is 100% true and necessary: “edited version needs to be released without students who did not give permission to be taped.” She also says that if the Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute, which sponsored the event, is “unwilling or unresponsive to the request, Georgetown will need to step in.”As a TV producer myself with decades of experience in the field, there is no question GU is taking appropriate action to protect its legal position as well as that of the students who did not give permission to be taped. There are (at least) two standard ways to ensure rights are protected when shooting a public event that will air later, regardless of the outlet. 1. Get each person in attendance to sign a release form. 2. If the crowd is too large, there are still three more things that should be done. - If it is a ticketed event, a disclaimer should be printed on the physical ticket itself, AND
- There should be highly visible signage at entry points to make sure everyone sees them (and they need to be videotaped in situ for confirmation should questions arise later), AND
- An announcement should be made from the stage after the attendees are in place re-stating the information on the signage and the tickets.
That is TV production 101. If the "College Republicans" were too unaware, ignorant, careless, or arrogant to follow these basic, standard procedures, then shame on them. Attempting to completely misrepresent GU's legal obligations as somehow part of a deep-seated anti-right campaign is grossly inaccurate. It's embarrassing that a GU grad would fall for such nonsense.
And what on earth are you doing reading -- AND CITING! -- such an over-the-top ideological publication as Hot Air?? As soon as you read the totally gratuitous, factually questionable, utterly pointless and carelessly "edited" line: Last week, Ms. Sommers (in some schools, the term “Ms.” is offensive) gave a lecture at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. last week. You have to know the rest is pure garbage.
