Our women's program is a disaster. No, it's just not very good. The larger problem is that Georgetown institutionally consigns programs to the "low expectations" group and never consistently competes nationally. If the Terri Flournoy era is seen as more an aberration than a realistic goal to get back to, women's basketball could go the way of volleyball as a low-interest, low return sport.

Great. Thanks for changing "disaster" to "not very good." Dynamite drop in, DFW.
It's hard to be as bad as we are when we offer a full complement of scholarships at the best school in an area with lots of female basketball talent.

Great. Thanks for changing "disaster" to "not very good." Dynamite drop in, DFW. It's hard to be as bad as we are when we offer a full complement of scholarships at the best school in an area with lots of female basketball talent. I mean, let's give Coach Adair more than a few games under her helm before we judge the state of her program, eh? I expect it will take a little time to recover from the worst mistake of the Lee Reed era: giving Brown the head coaching job. Full complement of scholarships is key; best school in the area is unquestionably great, but it's also a two-way street. The biggest outstanding issue is facilities. I know that topic's been beaten to death in discussions of the men's team, but remember - they get the top priority in everything when it comes to the facilities we do have now. At many other schools, the women's hoops team has benefited from the facilities footprints of the men's teams. That's not so much the case at Georgetown... for now. Once the IAC is built, the women's team will experience a quantum leap in that regard, and I expect the recruiting and reputation will improve accordingly. Such are the wages of supporting that many varsity sports with that type of budget/endowment. What I don't understand is why some folks on the football board don't understand exactly that: Georgetown football is viewed as a low-interest, low-return sport that is institutionally consited to the "low expectations" group and never consistently competes nationally.

I work on campus and didn't get an offer for free attendance, so don't know anything about that. I do know that four coaches in four years will disrupt just about any program. Give the new staff time to straighten things out. We have a terrific freshman in Dorothy Adomako. Hopefully more will come.

We had a terrific freshman last year too...and now she's at UCONN.

Obviously the team is not performing at an acceptable level for a full scholarship program at Gtwn. I think its also pretty reasonable that the new coach deserves some time to turn things around-not just a few weeks--like a few years. it would seem like a program that we should be consistently nationally competitive at and occasionally elite. If we are not nationally competitive in a few years, then we should change direction.

In a nationally-televised game from McDonough (yes, it's Fox Sports 1, but that's what most of the men's games are now, so...), the women win their first Big East home game over Marquette, 83-76.
For what it's worth, they showed Coach Adair in the huddle a few times, and I thought she came across as savvy, patient, intelligent, instructive, and generally leaderlike. The women were down by double-digits early on, but there was no panic; she calmly conveyed what was going wrong, what had been going right, and delivered cogent instructions on what needed to be corrected.
Of course, the ultimate credit belongs to the players on the court, most notably Dorothy Adomako (21 pts, 11 rbs), Brittany Horne (18 pts, 6 rbs), and Katie McCormick (17 pts, including two critical first-half threes that put the exclamation point on the Hoyas rally from being down and left them with a lead at the half). Granted, Marquette is not a good team. They have a first-year coach who, as best I can tell, is 30 years old. They gave up 24 offensive rebounds, which is downright cartoonish.
Nevertheless, given the deeply negative tenor of both the start of the season and the comments here, it's worth acknowledging a successful performance over what is in many ways a similarly-situated program.

I watched the last twelve minutes of the game on Fox Sports 1, and was similarly impressed with the on-court poise shown by the team. Horne hit some monster three point shots, and they controlled the offensive and defensive boards. Marquette's overall record was a little better than GU's, although I can't speak to the level of competition each squad has faced before tonight.
Nice to see a win, especially given the lack of success in the prior ten games, and it's always great to see smiling Hoyas at the end of a game. Hopefully they can build on this, and surprise a few teams along the way.

FWIW, according to the TV broadcast, Ki-Ke Rafiu had retired from basketball due to injuries and is now effectively a quasi-player/coach... minus the 'player' part. You always feel for someone when injuries cut their playing career short, but I think we have more than enough evidence that Ms. Rafiu's best days are ahead of her - she is a very, very special person. www.guhoyas.com/sports/w-baskbl/spec-rel/020514aaa.html

Very nice win for the Lady Hoyas. Hope this is the beginning of a turnaround. Enjoyed very much watching the team work together and encourage each other.
