Random place to ask this question, but hopefully someone will answer. And apologies if this has been discussed before. What's the philosophy behind ALWAYS playing zone when the ball is in-bounded beyond half court? My guess is it's to cut down on cuts to the basket, but it always seems odd to me that JTIII sticks to it so religiously, especially when zone hasn't been working at all during a game.

What's the philosophy behind ALWAYS playing zone when the ball is in-bounded beyond half court? My guess is it's to cut down on cuts to the basket, but it always seems odd to me that JTIII sticks to it so religiously, especially when zone hasn't been working at all during a game. The only time they really exclusively do it is when the inbound is from under the basket. If it's from out of bounds on the side near half-court, they often play man. But otherwise you're right: the main idea is to prevent an easy cut to the basket off of a screen for a layup. We frequently ourselves get good looks there, just from running a v-cut or a UCLA cut with a guard against a man defense. The last couple years, we've nonetheless given up some easy baskets in the zone when guys don't properly see the ball, which must be infuriating to JTIII, since it should never happen. Once it's inbounded, I'm sure there are times you could switch back to a man, but there'd be a lot of risk in doing it as players tried to find their guy and the offense took advantage of confusion. So I'm sure that's why you see the whole possession as a zone. I suppose an added advantage is that often (though not always or even most of the time), the inbound play comes with less than 35 on the shot clock. And in those situations, it's harder to get a quick, quality shot against a zone than it is against a man.

It would be nice if our opponents had to account for at least the possibility that we might play man in that situation. Mix it up every once in a while.

Well, this is a terrifying stat:
"Alexander is one of the best in the country at forcing contact and provoking fouls, drawing 8.7 fouls per 40 minutes. That number ranks eighth in college basketball."

That number ranks eighth in college basketball." Luckily he fouls quite often himself 4.9 Fouls/Called per 40 minutes. That's the same rate that Jabril had last year. Sadly the Refs and fouls will play a big part in this game. If we can get Alexander in foul trouble before he gets us in foul trouble we'll be well on our way. Smith has a rate of 6.3 fousl drawn per 40 minutes and DSR has a rate of 4.9, peak is at 4.7 so we have guys who draw fouls too.

Let's call it a draw and agree to no foul calls in the paint for either team. I'd have to change my score prediction in that case...

I say we just start with Hayes and have him draw fouls on both end of the floor.

Gotta keep the focus up. Can't get in foul trouble. And play some defense.

Wow. Hopkins has taken 29 shots at the rim, and only made 11. That's horrible. White's number is worse now, but he's got a much smaller sample size (2/7). It only underscores that we want to see defense out of Hopkins and only minimal shooting unless he's got an absolutely outstanding look.

Beautiful move by White. Disappointing to see the banners over the student section. Agreed. The section seems pretty full, hopefully they'll open them before sending students up to the 400s.
