And we are one of the elite offensive rebounding teams in the nation (13th). Only one JT3 team has ever finished in the Top 50 -- the 2007 team. That's pretty sad. It's really hard to crash the boards and then play solid transition defense when you don't get the rebound. I think a big contributing factor to the slow overall pace of our games is that most years our transition defense is solid, and we give up fewer quick run-outs than most teams. We have on average taken quicker shots than our opponents every year for which Pomeroy has separately tracked offensive and defensive tempo (i.e., 2010 through 2015).

The lack of offensive rebounding has been a combination of personnel, offense and strategic choice. A lot of teams don't press offensive rebounds so they can have strong transition D. When Georgetown has been a strong offensive rebounding team, it's also been when we've been playing someone who demands a double team in the post (or two of them) combined with a couple of decent offensive rebounders. Hibbert and Green got a ton of O boards; when Green left and Hibbert became the offensive focus, Summers did not take advantage to crash the boards as well as Hibbert did when Green drew multiple people. Right now, we've got the same thing going on with Smith and Hopkins, plus the added bonus that both rebound their own misses an astounding number of times.

Should be a war. Need to come out of the gates focused and smart. Hoyas have a great shot if they execute fairly well and play with intensity.

The prevailing NBA strategic wisdom is to sacrifice offensive boards in order maintain strong transition defense. I don't know what metrics this strategy is based on, but this is what the most data-driven NBA teams are doing these days.

As ksf42001 has posted separately in the Kansas articles thread, Jayhawk head coach Bill Self has suspended junior forward Jamari Traylor for one game; Traylor will sit out Wednesday's game at Verizon Center, although he will travel to Washington with the team.

Apparently had a tough upbringing, even living on the streets for awhile. Sad to see him having run-ins with the law. Don't know his role on the team. He's 5th most in minutes, starting the first two games of the year. Doesn't seem to score much, so I'm assuming he's in the game more for defense than anything else.

Jamari Taylor's offensive efficiency was horrible (73) but he gets a ton of blocks, so I am assuming he was in there more for defense.

You get the impression (from DSR) that the team is really fired up for this game. I feel like Josh Smith could potentially have one of his best games. He had such a disappointing performance last year against Kansas and I bet he comes out more motivated than just about anyone. If Smith can deliver the buckets, I like our odds.

I would be happy if the Hoyas ran the first offensive play of the Towson game about 20 straight times to start out.

Doesn't this mean more minutes for Cliff Alexander? Not sure if this is necessarily a good thing for us.

Josh needs to score, but perhaps more importantly, he needs to draw attention and fouls.

It's time for Paul White to add to his game and grab an offensive rebound. Zero for the season thus far.

Question is who will be the refs for the game? If they are non-conference refs that are prone to call any contact in the post by offensive player an offensive foul then Josh and Hopkins will have a long night. However, if they call a normal BE game where incidental contact is allowed then it should be a good game for both sides.

I will be shocked if Kansas does not start the game by collapsing on Smith and daring the Hoyas to prove they can hit the outside shot consistently. Kansas does not appear to be huge on the inside in terms of the player/minutes played, so I doubt they can afford to try to guard Smith with one man. Wisconsin played it smart by taking away the inside giving Smith only 7 shots all game, I believe. DSR burned them. Same formula needed here with a little help from players like Jabril, White, Copeland and Peak on the perimeter.

hope the atmosphere at Verizon is strong/loud. game falls on the first day of final exams... Where are the priorities? I remember hustling through a Statistics Exam with Winkler that I was given the entire day on so that I get to the Cap Center and watch us beat up on a patsie.

hope the atmosphere at Verizon is strong/loud. game falls on the first day of final exams... I have no faith in our fan base, least of all the students. Obviously it sucks this game is a midweek game and not on a weekend for out of town fans, but still. Any good fan base should have this game at a near sell out. We'll probably only have 12k there.

Ah yes, Dr. Winkler. I remember when, during the Business Statistics final, someone ordered a foot long sub to be delivered by Blimpie's to the exam room. Deliveryman showed up and announced "Blimpie's for Dr. Winkler," and nearly caused him to have a fit of apoplexy. "No, no, I did not order this!" Let's not preemptively dump on the game attendance. There will be plenty of time to discuss attendance numbers after Wednesday. In my day, we did all of our studying during reading week, and had plenty of time for extracurriculars during exams (cough, cough).
