To be held the week before the Big East tournament apparently, not sure how that works scheduling-wise...

All credit to whomever negotiated and drafted our contract with MSG for the tournament. Both the ACC and Big Ten tried to knock us out of it, and they've both failed. If the Big Ten wants to take 11 days off before the NCAA tournament, be our guest. Shows how much they wanted it, I guess.

I don't know how to link this. I just saw it in a blurb on pg. 8 of the NYT sports section today. Announcement expected Tuesday.

They're doing it the week before the BE tournament. They'll have a nice 11 day layoff before the NCAA tournament. Link: hoyatalk2.proboards.com/post/608043/thread

Still not ideal for the Big East, since it's almost certain they'll draw bigger crowds for their games (and they'll have more games to play too due to conference size). If the Big Ten wants to make MSG a permanent home, MSG might try to relegate the BE to the earlier weekend (depending on the current BE contract with MSG).

The Big Ten will never make the Garden a permanent site for their tournament. This is still a midwestern league that, while attempting to establish a footprint in the east, will not forsake its roots. The longtime members of the B1G will not permit the tournament to be relocated on more than a once-in-a-while basis away from its main fan base. I can see the Big Ten coming east to New York every three or four years, and once in a while to Washington (to placate UMCP), but it will ordinarily use Chicago and Indianapolis as its primary tournament sites.

Agree that B1G will never make their permanent home MSG, but that doesn't mean that we will always get prime positioning either. The Big East needs to keep winning or else we may find ourselves in a rotation with the lesser basketball conferences.

Hmm... no teams in the NY vicinity -- unless you consider Rutgers a Big Ten Hoops powerhouse. Just poaching. Maybe they should have it in LA? Or South Beach?
It does give us an opportunity to see just how important/valuable MSG and NYC are to the BET and our conference. I suspect the BE will be a lot more successful this year -- at least I hope so and early returns look good. We can make a big step in the right direction in that regard on Wednesday night.

This thought just hit me. . .one solid week of the Big Ten tournament, followed by another solid week for the Big East tournament, means that the New York Rangers will probably be spending two straight weeks on the road in the last full month of the National Hockey League season. The New York Knicks can get a couple of games in on the basketball court there, but this cash grab by the Garden hurts a primary tenant. Of course, as a New Jersey Devils fan (yes, I'm the one), this doesn't bother me a whole lot.

Still leaves Sunday, Monday at least, and probably one Wed. I don't know how that might play out, but I seriously doubt MSG would do anything to screw the Rangers since they own them.

The Big Ten now has fourteen teams. I assume that they will invite all teams to the tournament. That means thirteen games, and I assume that they will run it through that Sunday (one less open day for the finalists between the tournament and the NCAA tournament). That means two games on Saturday, four games on Friday, four games on Thursday, and two games on Wednesday. The court will be down on Tuesday so each team can have a practice on the court before their games on Wednesday. That leaves Monday of that week for the Rangers. I suppose they could then pick up the court after Sunday's final and play a game on Monday night. The Big East, if it is still at ten teams, will run Wednesday through Saturday the following week as it presently runs (two on Wednesday, four on Thursday, two on Friday and the finals on Saturday), again with the court down on Tuesday for practices. Still, it's nice to dream!

This is the dumbest thing I've ever heard of. Delany is a buffoon. Its like he and Roger Goodell are brothers. Let's expand the Big Ten to Canada and London while we're at it!
Everyone is going to be so confused about why some hideous Iowa v. Nebraska is forcing them to look harder for that low-major tourney final they wanted to watch. And the Big Ten coaches are going to SCREAM about this when it gets to be the year. To have to deal with an 11-day layoff entering the tournament?
Honestly the greed is disgusting. If you insist on doing this, why not just move a few of your marquee regular season conference games to MSG. Michigan State-Wisconsin or whatever.

Anything that may be bad for the ACC is ok by me, but that 11 day layoff seems really odd to me. Who could they possibly play in the week following their tournament? Louisiana- Lafayette and Princeton? Going into the Dance off a long layoff doesn't strike me as optimal for the conference.

The scalpers will love trying to dump tickets for the opening doubleheader featuring Iowa vs. Northwestern and Purdue vs. Illinois. Besides, Rutgers fans and students rarely showed up at the Big East tournament; I don't see them doing much more for this one.
