I guess 21 isn't bad but considering the Hoyas are #13 in RPI playing in the second toughest conference in the country, I was hoping for something in the high teens. The ghost of the Big East has five teams in the top 25 - Villanova, Notre Dame, Louisville, West Virginia and Georgetown. And that's without UCONN or Syracuse which would have typically been in the mix. Looks like Providence is knocking on the door with 29 votes with games against DePaul and St. John's this week. Butler is playing at Marquette on Saturday. Would be good to see them stay ranked for the good of the conference.

One of Texas and Baylor and one of Wichita State/Northern Iowa will each lose this week. If we want to have a real chance at a conference title, we have no margin for error over the next 3 games before we get to play with house money at Nova.

Absolutely pounding Villanova was the key. That showed a national audience that the ceiling was just beginning to be scratched.

They still have a decent shot at an NIT bid, though

Hard to believe the NCAA would impose a ban for this year this late in the season, although given how mediocre they are this year, and the recruiting class they have coming in, SU is probably begging for it to be this year instead of next..

Absolutely pounding Villanova was the key. That showed a national audience that the ceiling was just beginning to be scratched. Most likely true. I also tend to think that there's always a sense of "we can't be that wrong about Villanova" so they had to bump the Hoyas significantly. Regardless, if our Hoyas keep rolling, those things take care of themselves to a degree.

The same day as an apocalyptic storm sweeping up the east coast. Coincidence? Methinks not.

If Fugly has us at #20, we probably really are top ten.

Some stats to ponder:
Heading into February we shouldn't complain too much. Since Xavier is 25 in RPI today we have only lost games to top 25 teams this season. And we beat a top 10 team and rival to boot. Not too shabby.
We have played 8 games against top 25. Duke Wisconsin virginia combined? 6 total games. And we have as many top 25 wins as any of them.
We also have a wierd profile. 2-6 versus top 25 and 2-0 versus the next 75 teams in basketball. Unlike other teams we haven't faced many decent teams RPI wise where a win or lose could move needle but more teams on extremes. The St. John's and seton hall games will be the ones which really tell us more about the direction these hoyas are heading. And pretty important games seeding wise (although it feels like they all are!)

I dont think that is really a weird profile. We are 3-6 against the RPI top 50. That's sort of what you would expect from a 14-6 team.

Gotcha. I think that Indiana win is going to look really good by the end of the year. I know they are an inconsistent team, but they have 4 top 50 wins, and unless they lose some really bad games, their RPI will keep rising. Even the Florida win isnt as bad as I thought. They are still in the top 75, which is sort of surprising. They stink

They really do stink. If they were who pundits thought they would be our schedule would be even tougher.

On the whole, I'm pleased with our profile at this point. I wish we had stolen one more game that was there for the taking. Kansas is the one that still sticks in my head - we were the better team that day, we just forgot to cover Branden Greene on 5 different occasions and that was the difference. Would love to have that one back. But yes, stepping back, we're in good shape to this point to secure a solid seed in the NCAAs if we take care of business the rest of the way.
