Lots of negative publicity regarding Maddon taking Renteria's job. It's happened before. In 1979, the Tigers hired Sparky Anderson in the middle of the season, after promoting their AAA affiliate skipper, Les Moss, during the previous offseason upon the retirement of Ralph Houk. Wonder if there was grumbling back then, too.

I am sure there was but it was likely limited to local print media and local TV. Also Anderson had a bit better pedigree with 4 pennants and 2 WS

I wonder why nobody complains when a team upgrades a position and "fires" the incumbent player. How is this any different? A chance to get better fell into their lap and they took it. It's not like Renteria isn't going to get all of the money he's due.

Rick Renteria may yet land on his feet. After being canned by the Cubs, he rejected an offer to stay "in the system." It is being reported that he may be headed to the Twins managerial opening resulting from the firing of Ron Gardenhire.

After watching Ned Yost, of all people, take a team to the WS this year, I'll never again be surprised by any second/third/fourth chance offered to a manager...

To say he manages unconventionally is an understatement.

Wow. I am stunned. Never saw that coming.
If I can't believe A-Rod, who can I believe?

No surprise here - I've thought he would end up in Wrigley all along. He will be surprised at how lousy the team behind him is (I went to my first Wrigley game ever this fall and the Cubs trotted out a lineup with only too hitters over the Mendoza line). Maybe, but if Maddon can lead the Cubs to a pennant he will be revered in that town like no one since Jordan.

That lineup should get good fast--the Cubs farm system is stocked with top hitting talent that's pretty close to ready. Javier Baez, Starlin Castro, Anthony Rizzo and Jorge Soler are all guys that are 25 or under, really talented and have cracked the majors. Kris Bryant and Addison Russell are Top 5 in baseball prospects as well that are ready / very close to ready for the majors. And the Cubs obviously have the resources to fill out the lineup as needed. The Cubs are primed to break out like the Rays did, either this year or next.

I was pretty sure Lester was not coming back to Boston when he sold his Boston-area house shortly after he was traded to the As.

Hamels to Red Sox is next for three overrated future flop prospects...

I hope the Nationals re-sign Zimmermann, and don't trade Clippard.

Hamels to Red Sox is next for three overrated future flop prospects... Guess not, seeing as the Sox have picked up three starting pitchers since this posting (Masterson, Miley and Porcello). Looks like the Phillies' asking price for Hamels is out of line with what teams are willing to offer right now. Best guess now? Maybe Cincinnati to fill in a slot vacated by Reds' trades of Cueto to Detroit and Latos to Miami. . .maybe the Evil Empire in the Bronx, because they are in desperate need of a starter. . .maybe the Giants for additional starting pitching depth. More likely? He stays in Philadelphia and Ruben Amaro Jr. is job hunting by the All-Star break.
