As classy as it was for Cooley to show up, I am just as impressed at Boeheim's class in staying the heck away

Someone should let Ben Standig know that Thompson coached at St. Anthonys not at John Carroll.

Ben's first graph:
The greats from Georgetown's basketball history were back on campus Friday morning. Patrick Ewing showed. So did Alonzo Mourning, Dikembe Mutombo and Reggie Williams. The "prodigal son" Allen Iverson wore a gray kangol hat and sat in the front row with the current Hoyas just off to the side.
He did get Pops' HS coaching data wrong, but he nailed the Top 5 players in GU history -- all there today for Pops. Quite a statement.

Quite a statement. Mutombo isn't in the top five unless you are considering NBA careers. And if we are considering NBA careers then as regards to Big John's players Sleepy Floyd beats out Reggie Williams. In fact even if we don't consider NBA careers, Floyd is still in the top five....although I never saw him play. Edited to point out that I was beaten to the punch in regards to Sleepy.

Just the best. Can't believe I missed it. My sister gets married and I have to miss this! Amazing. Nothing else but that. Just the best.

Cooley showing a lot of class coming down for the event… Wondering if Cooley's presence reflects Providence's class, too. PC is, of course, Big John's college alma mater.

Phil Knight also sent in a tribute and Iverson gave a speech and made a practice joke in it. Sounds like an amazing night. Jealous of those who were actually there.

From Ben Standig's Twitter feed:
Standig does an outstanding job covering the Hoyas, IMO.

Notes from the Friday night dinner.
From the start of the cocktail hour to the end of the final benediction the event was six hours long!!
Despite the length, the event was amazing. I have attended quite a few Georgetown functions and this was a once in a lifetime opportunity. I doubt that this collection of former Hoyas will ever have reason to be together at a formal event like this again.
I think we learned that they do not make microphone stands high enough for speakers when 4 of them ar at least 6 foot 10.
Former Hoyas were spread around the tables with the alumni and friends of the program. We were lucky enough to have Otto at our table.
The return of A.I. seemed to be the highlight of the evening for our current players. The major reason for this seems to be that the the bigs all seem to have spent a lot of time around the program while A.I. has been absent. Jabril in particular, as a Philadelphian, was really enthused to meet his idol.
Four former players spoke in person - Patrick, Zo, Deke and A.I. All were moving in their own way. Apparently Dikembe missed class one day due to sickness and came to the locker room to find a one way ticket back to the Congo in his locker. Mary Fenlon had to talk Big John into changing his mind.
The videotaped speeches by opposing coaches were all good, but Coach K's was the best. He spoke about Big John's role in forcing the acceptance of African-American coaches and said a lot of nice things about the program and the university, past and present.
Both the groundbreaking ceremony and the dinner had relatively little involvment from JT III. It appears that he was consciously trying to step aside and have his father be the focus of the evening.
I spoke with Ed Cooley and thanked him for coming to both the groundbreaking and the dinner. I also congratulated him on his recruiting. He said he was friends with JT III.
John became friends with Dan Rather (when Rather was the leading anchor in America) in his early years at Georgetown. Rather was at the dinner.
I am now convinced that Josh has lost at least 40 pounds and understands that this is his last chance to make a career in basketball.
I am really excited for the season. I think we win the Big East and make a March run.
