A Georgetown institution is going away (or at least changing hands): dc.eater.com/archives/2014/08/19/mr-smiths-will-relocate-to-chadwicks-space.phpNow whose advertisement will Jack the Bulldog sign? I still remember the weekly schedule from 1997-98 - Monday nights with half price cheeseburgers and pitchers, Tues $1.50 longnecks, Wed $2.00 pints, Thurs $2.00 Coronas, Sat $2.00 Heineken and Amstel, Bill the bartender (always "better than most, not as good as some"). Before the Tombs was ready to welcome me, Chadwick's was the first bar I ever loved. On my more recent visits to town for bigger events (reunions, big games), it has been the place where my classmates meet because it is generally not too crowded, which isn't such a great sign, I suppose.

Also a piece of espionage history. Chadwick's is where Aldrich Ames handed over two full bags of classified information to the KGB. The material led to the execution of at least ten Soviets working for the United States.
After the earlier demise of Au Pied de Cochon, where Vitaly Yurchenko abandoned the CIA to redefect, the Cold War espionage sites are disappearing.

I know I'm kinda old now but this is depressing. I was a fan of both places.

Shocked to see nearly every place from my time at gu gone (guards, Garrett's, sportsfans, champs, thirds, etc). Depressing.

The oldest bar in Georgetown was founded by a former Georgetown basketball player, but it's never been a student hangout per se. www.martinstavern.com/history

I guess there's always Irish Times.

Of course the restaurant/bar game is one of constant change everywhere, but some Gtown places seemed immune to it. In some ways the longevity of places in Georgetown is pretty remarkable: Chadwick's, Clyde's, Tombs/1789, Martin's, J Paul's, Old Glory, Mr. Smiths all have long history and defy any sort of modern restaurant trends. Other addresses in Georgetown have changed probably 15 times since 1967.

No on Babalu or Georgetoons for me though, IIRC, some of my Euro friends (very un-PC, I know) frequented Babalu. I should have also added the Brickskeller and Georgetown Billiards. I used to end up at Billiards often on my walk home from the Tombs only to have some of the Tombs staff roll in after hours. Speaking of which, I still consider John Brisette from the Tombs the best bartender all-time, anywhere. The man even knew my class schedule and would have a drink waiting on the bar for me during the break of a painful Wednesday night class in Walsh. At the time, my sister was managing the 89 and Pino, the bartender there, was great for a couple of "smackers" as he called them before a quick use of the back steps. Good memories.

What happened to Thirds?
Chadwicks, after Tombs, was the quintessential Gtown bar in my college experience. Then Thirds, then Champs. Yikes.

I never knew Chadwick's as I graduated one year before its opening. Where was it?

Rhino's replaced Winstons in about 98. Not sure if it is still there but presume it is or would have been listed in this thread.
Chadwicks is/was on the river- if you took Wisconsin all the way down to K street and bang a right you are just about there. (under the Whitehurst and facing Potomac.) There used to be a cool music venue on K street on the other side of Wisconsin- Black Cat maybe?
I love me some Mexican food but sad to hear that Thirds was replaced not by a bar but presumably by a restaurant for tourists. Is the outdoor tiki part still there? And sadder still they named it after the most depressing city in California not named Barstow. Wasn't the front of St. Elmo's Thirds and the interior was Tombs?

Closed when I was in school, maybe the late-90s. Also, Stockton says hello. And yes on St.EF.

Yes! Totally was the Bayou. Black Cat was elsewhere in the city and took a lot of the Bayou's gigs when it closed.
