I was hoping for more. Nonetheless, happy to see him back with the team.

We hope for Josh and certainly there were flashes of good play last year despite his size. In the photo, I agree that the middle is certainly not in shape. How strong is his commitment? If he can't do something along those lines in the next few months, I think III should move on and try to bring Hayes along.

All the picture shows me is that Josh is back on campus. I am glad of that...as previously stated, he is of some value, regardless of the shape he is in.

If he can't do something along those lines in the next few months, I think III should move on and try to bring Hayes along. The fact is we cannot tell much from that picture. Smith is wearing a dark blue shirt and pants so it is really hard to tell what type of shape he's in. To me, he looks like he's smaller than last year, but that's just as much speculation as everybody else analyzing the picture. The question is, will Josh Smith be in shape so that he can be an effective basketball player and perform better than our other center options? As for the latter, Smith was better than our other options last year, so I am pretty confident the same will be true this year. Is he in shape to play? Nobody knows, except perhaps Smith himself, the coaching staff, and maybe the players. Even Roy Hibbert never averaged more than 25 or 26 minutes a game, so I think that would be a fair expectation of Smith even under the best case scenario. That means Hayes should get plenty of time this year, as long as Hopkins is not put into the center role too much. Personally, I'd much prefer seeing Hayes to Hopkins, but I don't know how John Thompson III will handle that playing time. The last thing I will add is that losing weight is not necessarily as easy as people think. For some people, it really isn't simply a matter of working out and eating less. It's possible to work out and eat less and still have trouble losing weight. Is Josh one of those people? I have no idea, but I want to put it out there because it's not an easy thing for everybody.

Can we get a Josh Smith / LJ Peak "who wore it best" comparison going?

Was never going to come back looking like Karl Malone. So the first thing on the agenda was for him to not return in worse shape than when we last saw him. I think he passes that test. In fact he may have lost a few dozen pounds. The next crucial area is whether his stamina has gotten any better which of course remains to be seen. Agreed MCI. However I'd add that the first test was for him to return (period). That he did.

If I upload a recent pic of myself, will Hoyatalk guess my weight, tell me their goals and plans for me in the next year, and ask lots of rhetorical questions about my abilities? Or do I have to send it to the moderators first?
I'm kinda disappointed. I thought when Hoyatalk started to jump the stalker fan shark we'd be more FlightAware than Hot or Not, but it is what it is.

If he can come in and go hard at both ends of the court for a 4-5 minute stretch and then sit out for a short time he will be a valuable addition. This year the team has more athletes and can adapt to a slower center. However the key is the effort to get up and down the court. Overweight or not there is not and never has been a question of talent.

Georgetown didn't miss the NCAA Tournament last season because of Josh's weight, it was his academics.
Smith is what he is stature wise....the big question is will he be eligible for both semesters.

Really, all we need is him to pass his fall classes. If he fails his spring classes, it really won't affect basketball because the season will be over. Granted, I want him to succeed in both semesters, but from a basketball perspective, a strong academic effort from September through December is really all he needs.

For the record, I am not suggesting that Josh Smith should blow class off after December. I don't think we should stand for that (and if he was blowing off class in the second semester, I think appropriate action should be taken). I was just pointing out that, from a basketball perspective, the first semester is a lot more important than the second.
Our players should be expected to work hard academically every semester they are at Georgetown.

More: Last year’s official roster listed Smith as weighing 350 pounds, but he appeared considerably leaner while viewing the proceedings with teammates D’Vauntes Smith-Rivera and Jabril Trawick.
“Josh has worked hard this summer,” Thompson said. “Now he has to keep on doing it.”
