Lastly, we have no idea why Josh Smith was in California. Another baseless assumption: that Josh Smith's home is in California.

Where are all of the sleuths that hang around this board? Can't someone track him down and get a pic? PS--pm me when it happens. Good night! I am going to bed. Peak Hoyatalk, ladies and gentleman.

John Thompson III chooses his words very, very carefully, so when he tells Ben Standig "Going into this year, I think we’re going to have to be prepared for Josh on the court and for Josh not on the court,” that speaks to where this staff thinks of Smith right now.
No player has to stay over the summer but there are implications for those that do not. If someone wants to simply take the summer off, that comes as a risk to those who are unmotivated to make the most of it, and that's been the knock on Smith since his days at UCLA. It's possible Smith has willed himself to become a 270 lb. lean, mean, fightin' machine, and it's also possible that after a summer in Seattle, he's the same 300+ pounder that will labor to get up and down the court. If so, there will be a seat on the bench next to Bradley Hayes with his name on it.
This is literally Smith's last hurrah, and with Copeland, Peak, White, et al. ready to step up, Thompson cannot afford to rely on Smith to carry the load if he is unmotivated to do so. Size and potential are no longer a ticket to the NBA. Ask Wesley Wilson about that one.

At what point does this elevate to the level of stalking? Or maybe we are already there... (and yes, I looked, just like everyone else did.)

I am impressed by the way Bradley Hayes looks - he is legit 7 feet plus and he looks less doughy than he did in the past...
Josh doesn't look skinny or anything but I do think he looks better - plus I think coach's attitude towards this is the right one - it's not about an actual number but about whether he is light enough to be able to move on defense and get down the court.

Was never going to come back looking like Karl Malone. So the first thing on the agenda was for him to not return in worse shape than when we last saw him. I think he passes that test. In fact he may have lost a few dozen pounds. The next crucial area is whether his stamina has gotten any better which of course remains to be seen.

Josh likely will always be heavy. As III puts it, is he fit enough to gives us sustained minutes? Is he mobile enough to defend his position away from the basket and get rebounds? I remain cautiously optimistic.

Smith looks soft and doughy in the middle, like a scrumptious donut. Hayes looks like a MAN!

Smith looks soft and doughy in the middle, like a scrumptious donut. Hayes looks like a MAN! Smith looks like a cruller in comparison to his cream-filled appearance last season. Still work to do of course, but I have a felling 'bril and the guys will push him as hard as possible to get there.

Our front court has a new nickname: the Dunking Donuts. Might have issues when we play at Providence.
Agree with MCI. The first test is he doesn't look like Sweetney holding a tiny trophy. After that, it remains to be seen.

It is a little funny that most everyone else on the team is waifishly thin, excluding Brilly and DSR.
It is a very realistic goal for a fully committed person the size of Josh to lose 20-30 pounds in 3 months. It would require a strict diet and balls out exercise every day. I thought that it might happen last fall, but it didn't.
We'll see what happens. I have very low hopes for Smith. I think the final analysis will conclude "he was a bum."

There are another 3 months until the season starts. Now that he is back with his teammates, I'm sure all of them will be taking their strength and conditioning up a notch. Plus the salad bar at Leos was always decent. I'll be happy with another 10-20 before the first game.
