Reverend Al has made it to Ferguson. Start the calliope music, the whole circus is in town now.

I am as well. Since it is already a crap storm, he can't foment more trouble than they already have. Also, the prevalence of cameras means he's being watched.

Washington Post reporter arrested in FergusonMan, I'm glad I don't live there. How can you trust anything about Ferguson PD? They brought in tanks, and by their own admission, never trained for this type of situation. They are doing a great job of making themselves look like the most idiotic PD in the country.

One might ask how anyone could trust any thing which comes out of the mouth of Reverend Race-bait as well.
How many Ferguson Officers have been found liable of slander in connection with a proven hoax?
The formerly fat man sure has.

How many Ferguson Officers have been found liable of slander in connection with a proven hoax? The formerly fat man sure has. True. But one is really a separate issue from the other. It's difficult to assess for me personally. On one hand, it's good to shine a light on some of the issues/incidents he shows up for (and he does draw cameras) but his indelible lack of credibility really does, in my microscopic mind, detract from what he professes to be so passionate about even if what he says is worth hearing and what he's representing is worthy of representation. Maybe I'm just too cynical. But his words and actions from the past really do make it difficult for me to separate the personality from his protestations and statements about the issue at hand. I find it very difficult to watch or listen to him. I can't decide if he's doing more harm than good.

I understand your view tas. Simply stated, he is a liar and a self-aggrandizing charlatan of the worst kind.
Is there something amiss in Ferguson? It certainly seems so. Does Al Sharpton do anything to shed real light on the issues there? Heat? Maybe. Light? Not a chance.
The thing I find most shocking is how long it took him to get there. With all of the weight he has lost, you would think he would move faster.

With all of the weight he has lost, you would think he would move faster. He just makes me wish there was someone better to do what he attempts to do. I find it very sad that there isn't. At least not someone with as high of a profile. And he does blatantly bait. It's like he's still living in the 80's when what offended white America (at least as it seems to me) was quite different than what does now. The baiting seems more self-serving as opposed to what it used to seem like which (again, in my view) saying caustic things to get what little attention he could. Then it seemed like a means to an end. Now it seems like attention-whoring for his own betterment. And making it remotely about improving his own standing or status is in direct opposition to the professed purpose of him showing up in the first place. Again, my overall feeling is just sadness or disappointment that there isn't someone better, in many capacities, filling that role because the role itself could be more important and influential than it is with him filling it.

Has anyone yet determined whether the underlying shooting was at all justified or not? I've seen mixed reports about whether the kid had struggled for the cop's gun. It seems like the protestors and the police have all gone so far in escalating this thing that the answer to the root question is going to make one group look exponentially worse than they would have if the situation had been limited to just the shooting itself and some low-level protests. If the shooting was justified, then the protesters look like reactionary rabble who take to the streets without facts. If it wasn't, then the police look like wannabe militants with no regard for people's rights (much less the public image of their force, which is in shambles now anyway).

This is a well-stated summary of my personal perception of Sharpton and the polarization that he drags with him. I have similar questions.

Al isn't the issue here. An unarmed Black teen, walking home in his neighborhood, gets cursed at by the police, and less than a minute later, is dead at the hands of the police. The subsequent response by police has been so out of proportion that it would be comical, were it not so repulsive and frightening. The lack of leadership is appalling. Gov Nixon, call your office. Turn up the pressure, Al!

Credible eyewitness reports differ markedly from police statements. The subsequent over the top response, including the use of tanks, tear gas, and the journalist arrests make it nearly impossible to trust police accounts. There is a killer loose in Ferguson, and unfortunately he's a cop.

You can choose to focus on Al Sharpton's involvement or the apparent execution of an unarmed civilian by agents of the state in Missouri. Your choice.

Also might be worth focusing on the militarization of our police. M16s, MRAPs and camo are what you use fighting in Iraq or Afghanistan, not what you use to try and keep a protest from turning into a riot. Why is a police force in a town of 21,000 that heavily armed?

Or, I could wait until the facts have been developed, the posturing by police and citizenry has stopped, the federal investigation (announced prior to Rev Lardass' arrival) has been concluded and the media has forgotten and packed up its trucks and know what happened. What I do not need to wait for is to know that Al Sharpton is there for a constituency of one--Al Sharpton.

There is a killer loose in Ferguson, and unfortunately he's a cop. The over-the-top response just means the police in Ferguson overreact to civil unrest. It has no bearing whatsoever on the truth of the officer's account of the initial events. You could just as easily say that the protesting-turned-looting is proof that the other side is lying. Of course, that doesn't make sense either. And who are the "credible" witnesses? The kid's friend, who may have been helping him try to steal the cop's gun, isn't credible to me because he's not neutral.

Food for thought: www.huffingtonpost.com/paul-raushenbush/what-white-people-can-do-_b_5675759.html?ncid=txtlnkusaolp00000592I asked Rev. John Vaughn, Vice-President of Auburn Seminary, what kind of response he would like to see from white Americans. Rev. Vaughn responded via email that he hoped his white friends would be vocal and articulate why these killings are not 'yet another isolated incident' and 'explore the premise that racism is not a thing of the past.' Perhaps most importantly: "Listen to your friends and colleagues of color about their experiences and analysis of racism in America."
