A little early about writing about XC, but it starts in a little over a month. Early predictions are starting to come in. One has Georgetown men at 23rd. The following lists the position the runner came in during the Big East meet and the Mid-Atlantic meet. It may have formatting issues. Not on this list is Jonathan Green, who redshirted all year last year, but who won the American Junior 10,000m. 23 Georgetown Mid-Atlantic BIG EAST

. Brian King 14:14/29:49 SR. CA 13 13

No word on the women's ranking, but in the flotrack preview, they are counting down the women's picks. They are at #20, so the women are rated at least in the top 20, and probably in the top 10.

I think the women will be top 5. 5th last year and everybody back except Rachel Schneider. Lots of talent and depth. I am hopeful that the men can finish top 20. Springer is a huge loss but they will add Fahy, Green and some solid freshman recruits.

Re: the women we will need the former top recruits Nadel + Pierce to step up in a big way this year if we are going to have a top 5/10 finish. It's interesting that the women have had great mid distance recruiting under coach smith, but not so great distance recruiting under him the last two years as he was a distance guy.

I think the men are a bit of an unknown, especially since they lose Springer. They have the makings of a decent team; their goal #1 is to make the NCAA. They have to do well in the meets with top ranked teams and/or finish 2nd in the regionals. Stephen Kersh is a grad student at GU now, who ran for top 10 ranked Univ of Portland (my son's alma mater), but I am not sure how he did on XC.
Yes, no pure distance runners have been recruited for the women. The (mid-distance) women can adapt to the XC distance better than the men, because the women run 6K instead of 10K. Nadel and Pierce have shown that they can run 5K well, coming in as mile recruits. Of course, Katrina Coogan should be out top XC runner. The pure 800m runners will have more difficulty. I think the 800m runners will run some XC to build up their strength, but not sure how they would do in the 6K championship races.
Actually, looking at the roster of the new recruits, a couple of them have the mid-distance/distance tag, so maybe we might have some stars there. Bobbie Burgess, who does not have outstanding track stats, has a good background in XC, so she should be a big help this year. And Maddy Chambers is still listed; not sure how much eligibility she has.

For the first time in quite a while neither the men nor the women will be going to the Pre-Nats XC meet (at least they were not on the list of teams participating).
EDIT: I seem to have found a schedule for men XC and it has the Pre-Nats meet listed for Oct. 18:
Saturday, Sept 13 Sport Opponent Time Coverage Men's Cross Country; Track & Field vs Harry Groves Spiked Shoe Invitational All Day Friday, Sept 26 Sport Opponent Time Coverage Men's Cross Country; Track & Field at Boston University Invitational All Day Friday, Oct 3 Sport Opponent Time Coverage Men's Cross Country; Track & Field at Paul Short Invitational All Day Saturday, Oct 18 Sport Opponent Time Coverage Men's Cross Country; Track & Field vs Pre-NCAA Meet All Day
Women have the same schedule

Stanford women are "only" ranked 7th. They have the 4th place finisher from the NCAA XC meet, plus 10 new runners, including one who ran 4:10 for the 1500m. I can't see how they are ranked only 7th by Flotrack. The last paragraph in their ratings:
Miltenburg really has something going at Stanford. The ex-Georgetown athlete and assistant coach can probably sleep okay after all. Bringing back Cuffe and reloading with instant freshman talent, the Cardinal women look poised to send some wakeup calls of their own to their NCAA competitors.
So, since the Hoyas have not been mentioned yet, we are looking at a top 6 finish predicted for them preseason.

Letsrun has Stanford at 8 and Oregon at 7. Both could be top 3. Oregon has their top 7 coming back and like Stanford, bring in a bunch of talented transfers/newcomers. Sarah Baxter (undefeated in high school until her last race), Waverly Neer (all-american caliber at Columbia) and Brianna Nerud (Syracuse transfer and steeplechaser phenom). And then you have the former UConn All americans Zrinyi and Crevoiserrat who have another year in the Oregon system. Lots of deep talented squads out there.

Getting on the podium for the women will be extremely hard, if Stanford and Oregon are ranked only 8 and 7 at letsrun

In the flotrack preseason prediction Florida State was announced as #6 today, so the Hoyas will be top 5 here too.

Hopefully Coach Smith is right on both Katrina and team. For the men, i am generally too optimistic on their chances so i will go with what the consensus says and say 29th.

Letsrun.com has the Hoyas #3:
3. Georgetown: Hoyas Returns 6 of 7 From Last Year’s 5th Place Team
2013 results: 5th NCAAs, 2nd Mid-Atlantic Regional, 2nd Big East, 1st Pre-Nats, 1st Paul Short
Key returners (lose #4 from NCAAs last year) Name Class # returner from NCAAs Credentials Samantha Nadel JR 29 4:17/16:09 Haley Pierce SO 34 4:22/9:16/16:11 Katrina Coogan SR 40 4:13/9:10/15:34 Madeline Chambers SR 67 4:20/9:18/16:20 Rachel Paul SO 90 4:21/9:21 Annamarie Maag SR 117 4:24/16:29
Year 2 under head coach Michael Smith was a lot smoother than Year 1 and the Hoyas moved up seven places at NCAAs to finish fifth in 2013. With #4 woman Rachel Schneider the only loss, Georgetown is well-positioned to contend for its second national title in a four-year span (the Hoyas won in 2011 before coach Chris Miltenberg departed for Stanford). (From left) Haley Pierce, Samantha Nadel and Katrina Coogan should all be higher up in 2014.
Haley Pierce (bib 204), Samantha Nadel (202) and Katrina Coogan (199) should all be higher up in 2014. *More 2013 NCAA XC Photos
Samantha Nadel (47th), Haley Pierce (52nd) and Katrina Coogan (60th) led a balanced attack last year and all should be higher up in 2014. Coogan, the daughter or US Olympians Mark and Gywnn, made the biggest leap of the three on the track, getting down to 15:34 in the 5k. To this point in her career, Coogan has been better on the track (7th and 5th in the 3k at indoor NCAAs) than in cross country, but if she puts it together in Terre Haute, she’s capable of a top-15 finish.
Behind the top three, Madeline Chambers and Rachel Paul were solid contributors a year ago and can be counted on to deliver consistent performances at the #4 and #5 spots. They will have to — and hope one of Nadel, Pierce and Coogan can step up — if the Hoyas are to challenge the likes of Michigan and Michigan State for the national title.
Flotrack has Oregon #5, so the Hoyas are in the top 4 there.

Welcome email from Coach Henner:
We are back at it! Our staff and student-athletes are back on the Hilltop and getting into the routine of classes and practice. We hope our freshman have located all of their classrooms by now! For some of our student-athletes and staff, the summer was quite short. The USATF Junior meet was July 4 weekend and we had two athletes, Jon Green and Sabrina Southerland, who qualified for the Junior World meet held in Eugene, Oregon in late July. So our coaches and a few of our athletes kept the season going late into the summer. A special congratulations to Coach Brandon Bonsey for coaching Jon Green to a USA Junior win in the 10,000! Jon Green had a rough beginning to his freshman year with a lingering injury from his senior year of high school. With Coach Bonsey’s guidance, he recovered and turned what could have been a dismal year into a fantastic finish. Also deserving recognition is Coach Mike Smith. He coached Sabrina Southerland to a berth in the World Junior meet. Sabrina earned an individual All-American title during indoor and was still going strong into July. I am happy to report that all of our athletes reported back to campus in great shape and the early workouts for the men and women have gone very well! Our athletes are excited to be back training with their teammates and looking forward to the first meet. We will begin the cross country season on September 13 with the women competing at James Madison University and the men at Penn State. Our current roster is filled with unbelievably talented and determined student-athletes. They are a dedicated group that is willing to put in the work and live the necessary lifestyle. Their talent and hard work, though, will go to waste if we do not seek out and travel to the very best competitions in the country. It is only through your support that we can give these dedicated student-athletes the competitive experiences they need to fulfill their vast potential. Hoya Saxa,
Pat Henner Director of Track & Field/Cross Country

Olympian Julie Culley (London 2012 5000m) has joined the Georgetown coaching staff. She graduated from former Big East school Rutgers and has previously coached at Loyola of Baltimore.
