Inability to schedule home OOC games is only one of several structural problems the program has. And one of the many issues across different sports that the pending BB practice facility will/should help solve. Beyond that I will be interested to see how they do this year. They have an all BE level middle in White and a solid OH in Saar and Libaro in Simpson. So there are some good pieces. How well they do will depend on how well the setter Braunels develops and who comes forward at the other 2 pin positions. I hope Alex Johnson is ready for a big SR year and also hope the big freshman OH Cannon (great VB name ) is ready to go day one. Haven't seen them but if those 3 play well we have a decent shot this year. But always a good time and good game to bring the kids to.

And one of the many issues across different sports that the pending BB practice facility will/should help solve. Not sure that will help. The non-conference games take place in September, when basketball is not allowed to practice in the gym. The fact that the coach is scheduling so many tournaments is the real issue.

the tournaments are the way every VB program schedules pre season. Look at any other team and you will see 90% of their pre season is tournaments like that. So GU is no different.
BB can practice during the fall semester - just can't have coaches for part of those sessions. And the gym needs to be kept open for any recruiting visit. VB is not allowed to schedule their own pre season tourney like most teams. Given the number of visits they make to other schools they would have a multitude of teams hooked for return visits to GU but can't schedule them.
But to be clear - it isn't the top issue with the program. But an irritating one nontheless.

As to the top issue with the program, is it admissions, coaching, recruiting, or that murky middle ground where it is not good enough to soar, but not bad enough to cause people to stand up and take notice?

One more thing about scheduling. The VB team and most olympic sports have a max of 6 days or so they are allowed to miss school (something like that) so they have to schedule as many games as they can over the weekends - especially preseason - so they can save their off campus days for the conference schedule. So tourneys where they can play over the weekend (or locally in the case of the DC challenge) make sense for them.
As for the issues with the program, this is my opinion - take it for what it is worth
1) 9 scholarships versus 12 in a fully funded program. Leaves no room for injuries to key players or any player really. They have had injuries to setters with no real backup and a couple of times their playmaker was injured and their just wasn't anything behind them. 2) No room for recruiting misses - see above - And beyond injuries there have been some flat out misses. Wouldn't notice it nearly as much at a fully funded school. And they don't run kids off the way other VB programs do. 3) Academics - restricts the pool to a bigger degree than most realize - but on the other side personally I am not sure we sell the advantages of GU to the best extent possible. There are girls out there focused on academics - just have to find them. I know they try - no issue with effort. 4) Facilities, academic support, other ancillary stuff. GU is way behind other better funded schools in all of these. You have to want to come to GU - you are not blown away by the visit to the athletic part of the equation.
There has always been some legit talent on the teams since I started watching - there just always also seems to be some glaring holes/weaknesses that other teams exploit. They need a solid 7 or 8 players at one time which they haven't been able to put together. Multiple reasons listed above plus a few others. But hope this give you a sense.

There are scholarships in volleyball? What other sports offer full schollies at GU? I presume women's hoops is all full scholly? Doesn't lax chop them up?

First match tonight at American. Fun time as American usually makes this a big deal with all their returning students and puts a couple of thousand in the gym for the match with the band and other stuff. If you are looking for something to do with the kids tonight at American could be a fun watch. American is a ranked team to start the season so it will be a tough test for the Hoyas.

Solid weekend for the VB team. Respectable showing against the ranked American team playing in front of 2400 at American. Followed it up by beating both George Mason and Howard with relative ease. Now on to Philly and see if they can sweep there.

Hoyas playing pretty well 6-3 so far. Schedule has been "manageable" but they have done what they should have. They play George Washington tomorrow and that is a game against someone about where they are. Then they go to California where they will likely be overmatched before starting conference play.
Need to find one more hitter but so far so good.

Tough trip to California for the Volleyballers. Conference schedule starts tonight against a very good Creighton team - 7 PM at McDonough. As always fun time especially if you have daughters and looking for a place to spend time with them. Xavier and Butler at home this weekend.
