Here's the #1 issue with reffing.
Football has the same number of players, a smaller field and like 17 refs. Basketball has less than half the players, a tiny court and 3 refs. Tennis has two players, a tiny court and basically the same ref structure as soccer (one ref and a bunch of people to call in/out or offsides).
There's no reason why there aren't at least three refs in high level soccer.

Traffic is the reason for the attendance. I travel to Brazil on business fairly often. You haven't seen traffic until you've been to Rio or São Paulo trying to get to the international airport in the late afternoon. It is so bad that there is serious helicopter traffic/commuting in SP.

I have often made the point that soccer could do with more refs to make sure nothing gets missed. I think it is a good idea. However, neither yesterday's travesty, nor today's horrible, horrible calls had anything to do with a lack of eyes on the action. In fact, the replays fairly well demonstrated that the ref and/or linesmen all had clear lines of sight to the plays in question and they still blew it. But I'm $ure there wa$ a good rea$on why they made the call$ that they did.

The flopping truly sucks and takes away from the game. However, I don't buy that this is much of a contributing factor to soccer's so-called "unpopularity" in the US. I mean, Duke is one of the most popular college basketball teams in the nation.

I don't follow soccer, but can anyone tell me if a defending champion has ever lost its first match by 4 goals before?

From an article about Mr. Clean himself: "In his address to the FIFA congress this week, the organisation's president Sepp Blatter suggested introducing a television referral system that would enable managers to challenge up to two refereeing decisions per match."

What they need to do is video reviews for flops after the game and hand out yellow cards.

What they need to do is video reviews for flops after the game and hand out yellow cards. Or something close to that... So far, the refs have been shy about penalizing the floppers. The ref in the Colombia game should have yellow carded the Greek player who flopped inside the Colombia box.

Nice goal by Messi.
Now it's our turn. Essentially a must win. I'll go with 2-1 USA on goals by Dempsey in the 1st and late sub Wondo in the second.
Go Go USA!

And Portugal is imploding.
Still not all that confident about the US chances, but maybe having Team Turmoil in our group will be an advantage.
Still kinda wish France had held onto that title a little longer, but if it helps the US, I'm all for it.

Portugal will play better against us, this is more Germany's doing then their own. I'm still hoping for a Win/Draw/Draw. Maybe we can turn one of those Draws into a win if 1) we surprise Portugal or 2) Germany takes the last game off after already winning the group

Nice to see ESPN bungling this coverage as well.
This comment comes from an unabashed Messi fan, but did anyone at ESPN actually watch the Argentina game? Messi was, with the exception of that one moment of brilliance, absolutely pedestrian against Bosnia, spending much of the game floating throughout midfield or being easily dispossessed.
He is fabulous, his goal was fabulous but that game was not. No matter to ESPN whose preconceived story line was Messi brilliance, thus it was also the take away talking points.
Pathetic lack of observation or intellectual integrity. Given the Syracuse ties, probably both.
