Do we have a shot if he is granted a release? Will be interesting to see if a kid who committed to a school with a system named "havoc" could be swayed by what we run. Havoc is a defense. Shaka Smart doesn't run an offense. When they don't create turnovers for easy baskets they lose.

Well the positives are he visited here already and we were in the last 5 schools before he committed. This can't possibly be correct, since we don't recruit guards. I'm sure he won't make a decision until he sees who the new coach will be. If he re-opens, we should definitely be all over him.

As you pointed out they do not thrive in a half court offense. JT3 is known (whether true or not) as a system guy who runs a slow offense. That is why I asked.

Rhoades just took the Rice job a year ago. Not saying he couldn't bounce after a year but I'm not sure that's the guy you want taking over your program.

Rhoades to be offered VCU job. Jeff Goodman @goodmanespn 23m23 minutes ago Rice coach Mike Rhoades is out of the mix at VCU, source told ESPN. Rhoades is a former Shaka Smart assistant at VCU.

Rhoades said no from what I'm hearing.
Edit: He's definitely out.

I guess there's been no word either way as to what Williams is thinking? Assuming he's waiting on the hire to decide what he's going to do?

Reports indicate that it is down to WIll Wade (current head coach at Chattanooga, and a former Shaka Smart assistant at VCU), and Jeremy Ballard (presently a VCU assistant coach).

Is this a good hire? I am not that big on knowing all the coaches but it feels like VCU could have done better.

He was an assistant under him at VCU until he left for Chattanooga in 2013. He ran the same style of full court press at Chattanooga, but dubbed his Chaos instead of Havoc. He's 32 so extremely young. Seems to me they're trying to replicate what they had with Shaka. Would seem the recruits may want to stay imo since they'll be in a similar style.

I don't think VCU (wisely) wanted to go outside the tree. No one is going to take the job and have an defensive philosophy forced on them and VCU didn't want to lose the branding ... so they need someone who is going to run it willingly.
