Tubby Smith and Bruce Weber are ranked ahead of him and the recency bias of that list is off the charts.

Mike Brey of Notre Dame is at 45...and he has the same baggage as JTIII, nonetheless JTII has had more post season success
No way should Mike Brey be 45 and JTIII 46, those rankings should be reversed.
Tubby Smith has a ring...cant fault the ranking of him above JTIII, Bruce Weber has made the NCAA Championship game...that has to figure into him being ranked above JTIII.

I checked the top 25-50 list and there are way bigger complaints than Tubby Smith and Bruce Weber...
Mike Brey is just the tip of the iceberg, some of those other coaches have not been to 2-Sweet Sixteens.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA RICK BARNES HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA yeah we're done here. Josh Pastner at #42....4 slots better than JT3!!! How far exactly has Pastner taken his teams in the tourney? What's his record coaching head to head against JT3? How many wins does he have against ranked teams and how many does JT3 have? This list is a joke.

Top 5 coaches in no particular order:
1. Coach K 2. Rick Pitino 3. Billy Donovan or Bill Self 4. Tom Izzo 5. John Calipari
You can take any of those 6 in the top 5.

FOUR ACC coaches listed outside of the top 20??
Good Lord, Eamonn Brennon is most likely being hog-tied and pistol-whipped as we speak.

In my book JT-3 is ranked somewhere around #20. Enough said!

Well at least he beat out Richard Pitino.
Tim Miles? Jim Crews? Fran McCafferty? Ed Cooley, he of the one lifetime NCAA appearance? Chris Mack from Xavier? Steve Alford?
I'd agree with recency bias but for Brey - with zero final four appearances and a reason season that imploded and underachieved much more than GU recently.
They do seem to have forgotten that "Georgetown" had ceased being "Georgetown" when JT III took over.
As I was reading this I was thinking, "This is sort of humiliating for JT III."

I find this thread amusing. There are days on this board where 46 would be far above where he would rank.
There are other days where it would be 45 spots too low.
In the end, it really does not matter and Brey still can't coach a lick and looks like a jackass in his mock turtleneck.

One needs to take these types of rankings with a grain of salt. Given that John Thompson III has generally had a top 25 team or better throughout his career, I think it's safe to say he's probably a top 25 coach. Even if you take into consideration the March failures, JT3 has gotten us to the NCAA tournament - with a very high seed - several times and more consistently than most.
That said, for people who focus on the NCAA tournament, it's out of sight out of mind. If we make another Final Four Run (or even Sweet 16 or Elite 8), suddenly JT3 would shoot up these rankings.
Of course, people at the top of these lists talk widely about them, whereas people at the bottom say they aren't relevant. It's nice to be at the top of these lists, but it's certainly not science.

I just realized that I didn't read who actually did this survey and who was included and who wasn't and what the criteria were. So I pulled it up again and read these parts:
"Last week, we asked a panel of nearly 100 ESPN writers, editors, broadcasters and researchers..."
and,
"The crucial distinction here is that the prompt was not career-oriented. This isn't about legacy. It's all about the present."
So, with that in mind, JT3 should be lower than where he's ranked. Kevin Ollie should be number one. Coach K and Calipari? Well out of the top ten. At least they diversified the sample... all ESPN people. Very representative (as usual) of the CBB landscape.

Forget those early round losses to Mercer and Lehigh (and one Final Four since 2004), it's all about K and Dick Vitale will remind you of that often. Any list that placed Stew Morrill so low on the list betrays its veracity. Morrill is a future Hall of Fame candidate.

He's won the SEC regular season title and the SEC tournament twice and gone to 1 Elite 8, 1 Final Four, 1 Title Game Appearance and 1 Title in his five years at UK. Even his NIT season is excusable, since they lost their best player to a knee injury partway through the year. Is there any other coach with that kind of success in the past 5 years?

I would hope people are write about sports would have more intelligence than to weight a current ranking entirely on prior year. Or to know the talent issues that surfaced unexpectedly last year. But they put out a survey, which I'm sure people put little to no thought into.

Kentucky is a straight up pressure cooker... And is probably the most scrutinized coaching job in the nation by their fan-base. 2 straight years without at least a Sweet 16 appearance and John Calipari will be looking for another job
Is there another college basketball coach under as much pressure to win in the country??

Bruce Pearl is a better coach than JTIII and he's not in the top 50. There's a lot of recency bias in this ranking, so I'm not that upset with it.
