Fantastic job! Living in upstate NY is always a little more tolerable when the Hoyas beat the Orange boys. Hoya Saxa.

Huge win. As Rusky said Cuse spent time this year as a top 5 team in the country. Very good team that gave us a tough game dominating play for a lot of the first half before the Hoyas were able to settle down a bit. Overall a very entertaining game.
Great crowd at Shaw today. Hope it's just as good this weekend for another shot at a final 4.
Let's do this!

Yeah, I really thought that Syracuse was the best team we played all season (I think Coach Wiese and the players said the same) and they could have been the best team left. I'm starting to get pretty psyched that we could win this thing. But, one game at a time. UVA played a great defensive game against ND.

I'm starting to get pretty psyched that we could win this thing. But, one game at a time. UVA played a great defensive game against ND. I would absolutely agree. Syracuse played in a great league and did very well. Due to the number of teams in the ACC, they didn't play everyone. But, of note, they lost to ND 1-0 and beat UVa. And they gave up extremely few goals all year. In fact, this was only the third game all year they conceded two! They certainly weren't a defensive-oriented team, though. Syracuse held possession for long stretches, created dangerous scoring chances, and defended well organizationally and individually. They easily could have won this game, and it would have been a fair result. (Asterisk: I recognize that, by definition, any time Syracuse wins in any sport, it can't be considered a fair result.) That said, Syracuse stymied our attack, but certainly not completely. We had a ton of corners and also a decent number of good chances in the run of play. So, frankly, the fact that we were able to create as many chances as we did is a good sign for our ability to do at least that against any team we face. This may seem obvious since there's only eight teams left, but we've got at least as good a chance as any team remaining to win the whole damn thing. The ball will have to bounce the right way, as it always needs to, but we're not UMBC, which is playing with house money at this point. Nice article by Steven Goff in the Post on the game (including a reference to Yaro potentially being the top overall pick in the MLS draft were he to leave this year). www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/soccer-insider/wp/2014/11/30/hoyas-corner-orange-advance-to-ncaa-soccer-quarterfinals/Final 2, final 16, final 8 (at least) in three consecutive years. That's an incredible run for any team in any NCAA team sport in which these many teams compete. Question for DFW: I know there was a year where the volleyball team made the NCAAs and I believe we had other fall sports do well that year, too. But given our cross country and women's soccer results, is this going to be our highest standing in the overall Sears Cup (or whatever it's called now) after the fall season?

I would say it is. Points for all those four sports (men, women). When the women won the NCAA XC, they got 100 points; if the men win, it should definitely be the best.

It is great to have this game on campus. It looks like the student support has been strong.

Agreed with your take, aleutianhoya. Cuse definitely showed well, and they did have one stretch in the first half where they had the Hoyas on their heels a bit. Having said that, they didn't convert then, or on any of their other dangerous opportunities. Their one goal was a fine bit of skill, but I wouldn't go so far as they say they were "dominant" or clearly the better team, as their keeper does in his post-game interview. The field condition and some uneven officiating didn't help - neither team got into much of a rhythm or flow, I thought. Athletically, the Orange were definitely bigger and probably a touch stronger, but the Hoyas looked to have the edge on speed. They also did a great job winning corners, understanding that the uneven flow of the game made a score from the run of play unlikely (and, indeed, Cuse's goal was off of a short corner). I do give credit to Syracuse, and ODU before them: neither side turtled after getting their goal, but rather actively pushed for a second. The best defense is a good offense and all that; I'm glad the Hoyas were able to take advantage. Yeah, I certainly dont think Syracuse was dominant, but they did a better job than any other team at bottling us up on the wings. There are so many games where Austin is able to get free on the outside, and I honestly dont remember 1 or 2 times when we were able to work the ball that way. It would be really nice we scored 1st in one of these games

Finally tracked down and watched the Georgetown highlights. They do a nice job of showing the opportunities the Hoyas had during the first half, in spite of the Orange's control of a good chunk of the run of play.
Before we make any more improvements to Shaw Field, could we ask Mr. & Mrs. Shaw to fund: 1) A better video camera for these? 2) A way to synchronize the audio with the video? I know we don't have a journalism program or much of anything video-related, but... I'm pretty sure my new phone takes better video than this.
The confusion on the winning goal is priceless, because it's completely accurate - aside from the players (and fans) immediately closest to the play, no one could quite tell what happened for about 5 seconds.

Ha, yeah, I was definitely confused on the goal. It was about as far away from the fans and obscured from view as it could be.

Huge Save by Gomez w/ 34 min left in the 1st.
We're getting some good looks on crosses, would like a little better possession.
