What I'd like to move onto is when we can schedule Syracuse again. Coach has said he wants to, and that one of the things holding it up was potentially starting a challenge-type series with another conference. Well, now that we have that out of the way... Again, what is is to be gained with Syracuse, esp. post-Boeheim? No interest in a three game deal that basically sells seats in NYC for another de facto Syracuse home game--the Georgetown NYC contingent simply hasn't done its part to fill those arenas in recent years. Average attendance in the last five non-BE games at MSG or BarCap? 10,901, or just about 50% capacity. I'd rather play UConn.

time to move on. the train runs from NYC daily to support the HOPYAS at the booth with your attendance. some fans fly in from Boston for games. It's 2014, not 1947 time to move on from the old BE.

Again, what is is to be gained with Syracuse, esp. post-Boeheim? Yeah, once a school's legendary coach retires, they immediately become terrible and uninteresting. Or, you know, that happens.

Um - let's just play both.

Um - let's just play both. Our non-conference schedule should consist solely of teams from the old Big East--L'Ville, UConn, Cuse, Pitt, WVU, Cincinnati, Miami, VTech, Rutgers, USF. We can rotate through TCU, BSU, SDSU, Loyola (MD) and Temple to fill out the schedule (the three invited members and two non-basketball associate members).

Yeah, once a school's legendary coach retires, they immediately become terrible and uninteresting. Quite the contrary--the Hopkins era should be very interesting, if the sight of 10,000 Syracuse fans wandering around the Dome when Florida State is in town and the Orangemen are staring at 10-17. But it's not about Boeheim, it's about a fair fight. A Verizon-Dome-MSG rotation is wrong on a lot of levels and sends the message that Syracuse and their proxies at ESPN have Georgetown over a barrel. If Maryland signed a deal which would be played in Baltimore every third year, would we also call that a "neutral" site? UConn proved it could win without Calhoun, although their odds get a lot tougher going forward. Can Hopkins carry Syracuse to similar heights, or is he another Craig Esherick or Larry Farmer, the alumnus and longtime assistant in the shadows of a Hall of Famer everyone still remembers?

To my knowledge there has never been any indication that we would agree to anything other than a straight home and home. I would agree that MSG should only be a part if it replaces a Carrier Dome game.

I want no part of my Hoyas playing Syracuse. Let them enjoy the ACC. Cut the chord on those 8 milers.

We've had this debate ad nauseum. Some do, some don't and in the end it really comes down to what is best for the program and the Big East. I would be happy moving forward and creating new rivalries without "clinging" to the tradition of playing Orange. Already have a healthy dislike for Kansas, Indiana, and Xavier and a renewed dislike of Providence. I don't need Syracuse or Pitt or Louisville to maintain my interest or dedication, but if that is deemed the best way to keep the program healthy then let's play.

I don't think anybody's argument is that we "need" to play Syracuse. That's not really the issue. The issue is whether we would want a high quality out of conference game that will garner attention for our program, and whether it would put fans in the seats for a home game. The latter is especially important for those who seem to constantly whine about a poor home slate.
I think a home-and-home against Syracuse would be fine. Like others, I don't really like the idea of a home-MSG-away rotation, for the sake of fairness. Of course, we should still try to play other high quality OOC opponents, like Connecticut, Louisville, etc.
Still, if we could get a fair arrangement, why not play them? As I said, we don't need Syracuse, and they don't need us, but it would create an interesting OOC game, and that's a good thing for both programs.

He indicated he thought it was a good idea. I am not as down on the idea as I once was. If we get to control half of the ticket sales, then I am all for it actually. I think we can ensure 5-8K of our people get in the building, which is enough to make it a neutral court. Will it be easy for Alleva et al to pull that off? Probably not. But I think it's possible.

Understand your point but in fairness the primary reason to play Syracuse is the rivalry element of the game and not simply to play a quality out of conference opponent. We can obtain many high quality out of conference games to put fans in the seats. Start with UConn, Memphis, Maryland, Kentucky, Michigan, Michigan State and Indiana. Bring in Arizona, Duke or North Carolina. Next year's Kansas game will bring in a crowd. The reality is that the only reason for playing Syracuse over any of the other quality teams out there is the rivalry and that is fine with me, if the program really thinks it is necessary. However, I totally understand those who feel betrayed by and bitter toward the Orange and the other recent departees and have no problem not playing them for many years. It is, in fact, a much more understandable position than not playing the Terps for these many decades. Syracuse made a business decision to leave. It was probably the right decision for that school. Right now it looks to be genius as they are able to add the ACC to enhance their image, while still continuing to play many of their traditional rivals, like Nova and St. John's. The Hoyas need to start calculating the best scheduling strategy for combating the image that they were left behind and have sunk to mid-major status. It is a problem faced by the Big East and the AAC.

The fact is that many of the schools we would like to schedule are large state schools (Syracuse being a large private school). They have much larger alumni bases and will outdraw us on most neutral courts. We have to face this reality and not shy away from high profile games. Hell, we beat MSU at MSG.

Good god. The leaked matchups so far are horrendous for the Big East--getting the mid-major treatment.
