Anyone know how many of geographically close matchups already happen on a more or less annual basis? UW plays Marquette every year. Assume Xavier and Butler regularly play their in-state Big 10 counterparts, but maybe not? UW and Marquette play Seton Hall and Rutgers play Crieghton and Nebraska play Butler plays a rotating schedule with Indiana and Purdue DePaul has played Northwestern recently but not sure if it's a long term series like the others Xavier and Ohio St do not play Thanks. Doesn't immediately register that Nebraska/Creighton is a Big 10/Big East game.

JT3 says he expects Georgetown will play Terps in 2015.
I guess that presumes that Maryland has enough players to field a team.

btn.com/2014/05/04/big-ten-big-east-launch-gavitt-tipoff-games/Television coverage of the Gavitt Tipoff Games will be controlled by the conference of the home team. Big East home games will be telecast by FOX Sports 1, while Big Ten home matchups will appear on BTN or ESPN. Teams from both conferences already meet in some traditional rivalry games, and those matchups will continue during the 2014-15 season. The full schedule of eight games will be announced in late spring of each year. The new annual series will be officially introduced in a news conference Monday at Madison Square Garden in New York.

When does the Big Ten's TV deal expire? My guess is that Fox is going to get at least part of the Big Ten package (mostly because they need it desperately). This event could turn into a full Fox Sports 1 production or the beginning of ESPN and Fox having to work together on the Big Ten to some degree. Either way, this seems like a great promotion for the Big East.

Fox owns 51% of the Big Ten Network. I'm sure they'll get some of their product on to FS1.

Big Tourney to DCDelaney might want MSG, but the B1G tourney will be at Verizon before that happens.

Maybe for the B10, but only two Big East schools (Butler, Xavier) are ever going to get one of these games on campus.

Maybe for the B10, but only two Big East schools (Butler, Xavier) are ever going to get one of these games on campus. I understand the distinction you are making, but perhaps the writer needed to be clearer and say "getting these games at true home arenas and not at neutral often faraway sites" to prove his point. Surely Provy-MSU at the Dunk has appeal even if it isn't "on campus." Same with GU and any of the high profile B1G teams (and yes we have to schedule around the Wiz and Caps and Lady GaGa). You'd think the writers who are writing about a series in honor of Dave Gavitt would realize he didn't want games to be on campus. These will be great matchups and great tests, particularly for whoever the road team is. This is great for the Big East.

Yeah on campus is just a synonym for home court.

Now we need to add another challenge series. Time to get creative. How about a doubleheader event, like the Hoyas did at the Garden last year with MSU? For instance, the Hoyas and Nova could host two teams from the Big 12 at either Philly or Verizon. Similarly, you could pair other Big East teams at a site in the Midwest against teams from that region. The key right now is promoting the conference and I hope that the league will start featuring its teams in such "showcase" events that can be located reasonably close to the fanbase.

The key right now is promoting the conference and I hope that the league will start featuring its teams in such "showcase" events that can be located reasonably close to the fanbase. I liked the doubleheader last year, and I think it could work again, but maybe with a sexier matchup than St. John's and Marquette in the first game. I'd keep it small though, because I think one challenge series is enough; overcommitting would give us and other Big East teams too little flexibility in our scheduling. We still want to potentially play in the Maui, Atlantis, Coaches vs. Cancer, Preseason NIT Tournaments of the world, which also give us a lot of exposure in the early season. Plus, we are already playing Kansas for the next three years (home/away/home), so combine that with the Gavitt Games, and we have some pretty good opportunities for some good non-conference home tilts the next few years, something that people are always bitching and moaning about. What I'd like to move onto is when we can schedule Syracuse again. Coach has said he wants to, and that one of the things holding it up was potentially starting a challenge-type series with another conference. Well, now that we have that out of the way...
