I have no issue with the actions taken against this bigot. But why did the NBA not act when he was breaking the law as regards Fair Housing? Because it wasn't hurting their bottom line at the time.. Now that his actions are costing the league sponsors & money, he has to go...

Elvado's got this exactly right. David Stern and the other owners tolerated Sterling's garbage for years, and then Stern handed him Chris Paul on a silver platter to top it off. I give credit to Silver, but the league should have taken action against this guy years ago.
I will say one thing in behalf of Sterling, which you all can categorize under "this just means he's not all bad." He's one of the most significant philanthropists in Southern California. Of course, he then self-promotes it constantly. That's probably why the NAACP was planning to honor him. Sort of like taking blood money, I guess.

sterling deserved the ban for being an ignorant fool but the nba did this to save face for ignoring sterling for years and to satisfy the likes of magic johnson, who very well may own the clippers in the near future. speaking of nba owners, i wonder what the nba will do to someone like shaq, who publically mocked a disabled teenager on instagram?

Here is why the nba acted this time.
His words would get anyone fired at any company anywhere. He is recorded saying he doesn't want black customers. No action from the league would be implicit approval that it's okay to discriminate against customers by race. He opened the door for a massive class action lawsuit for discrimination.
All the rest of the terrible stuff he did didn't directly apply to the nba so they could turn a blind eye. This time not so much.
As for people being upset he got punished for his words. The nba punishes people all the time for their words - it's part of being in the league.
If you're a racist idiot who doesn't want to be punished for your words you should stay out of professional sports.

Then let's all admire Mr. Silver's business acumen and leave it there.

Now that Adam Silver has followed my advice of several days ago, I'd like to ask a couple of questions. Both involve changing Sterling's words from Black or African American to Catholic. Question 1: would the commissioner then have banned Sterling for life? Question 2: would Hoyatalk posters have called for his lifetime ban?

I hope so, but I'm not sure "Catholic" would resonate as much. I'll bet "Muslim" or "gay" would have prompted a similar response.

I know everyone in positions of privilege like to pretend that there's this horrible double-standard out there, but the reason why people are as sensitive when you say these things is because there's not a tremendous history of recent discrimination.

Me. Silver did what was good for business. Let's all hold off on the monuments. The NBA harbors this miscreant for decades. The NBA board of governors does not occupy any moral high ground in this episode.

As a Black man 70 years old, that has been arrested and beaten many times during civil rights protests. I see no victory for Black people or any others concerned with discrimination in words and/or deeds. Mr. Sterling has been forced to retire with his $2.1 billion worth and possibly $millions more if he is forced to sale his franchise at market value. If he is "forced" to sale, which could/would be a slippery slope, I hope that some Black business people would put their money where their money is and take the risk of becoming a majority owner. Yes, injustice at anytime whether with words or deeds is wrong and can be hurtfu8l as I have experienced for many years of my life. But there are many, many other issues that concerns me in society than irresponsible and ignorant comments made by an elderly man.

It wasn't just the other owners and Stern who ignored Sterling for all these years; let's not forget all of the African American free agents, like Chris Paul, who signed with a well-known racist owner because it was in the player's best financial interest to do so.

Why just black free agents? It's all good if white free agents go play for a racist? Everyone in the nba turned a blind eye because it was inconvenient. Once that was no longer possible and the actions were aimed at them - they did what they should have long ago.

Kareem hit the nail right on the head with regard to Sterling. The righteous indignation here is as disgusting as Sterling's words. When he got sued for fair housing violations and had to pay millions for excluding minorities from his properties nobody said a word. The joke that is the local NAACP was ready to give this guy his second lifetime achievement award for God's sake. But wait. His idiotic words get aired on tabloid TV so now he has to go. He insulted Magic Johnson so now we get to take away his property. This is just another form over substance public flogging designed to make people feel good about themselves. I am not going to begrudge anyone's justified anger or offense at the vileness that is Donald Sterling, certainly not the players themselves, but yeah, Kareem made some pretty good points and there are a LOT of people and organizations with egg (or worse) all over their faces on this one. And that includes David Stern, the NAACP, and many members of the sports media who rarely, if ever, showed any indignation prior to this episode (though, granted, there were some who've been on him, and the league, for years). And, of course, we can't forget the professional bilge snipe in the political media who were all rushing to claim that Sterling is a supporter of the OTHER party. (In fairness, I think the Republicans started it, but its equally vile -- not to mention irrelevant -- on both sides). I would expect a Steinbrenner-like punishment to come forth. Not sure if much more than that is possible (or legal). As a conservative, I was interested in your thoughts the most.
