Thought it would be worthwhile noting what Casual Hoya is doing to raise money for the IAC. They just launched ‘The Casual Campaign' for the John Thompson, Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center sbnation.com/e/5503933One of my good friends over at Casual just donated $1984 today, and it also happens to be his Bday. Very cool stuff!

A welcome development. I have been banging this drum for quite some time and the project has always needed the rank and file Hoyas in addition to the hoops alumni.

Construction on the TAC (that's what we're supposed to call it now, apparently) has commenced. The men's and women's tennis teams become the newest Hoya squads booted from campus. Georgetown Hoyas @georgetownhoyas It has begun! Construction has started on the new John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center! #HoyaSaxa

Yeah Roy! Figured this was coming, but it's still a great gesture from Hibbert. He's the man.

This has to have been lined up for awhile. Good for him. My guess is they have a few more like this in the hopper and will continue to announce over the coming weeks to keep this on the front pages. Mourning, Dikembe, Othella, Monroe. For those that aren't in that million dollar level, it would be nice to see some sort of collective donation made without exact amounts disclosed and maybe a million total from the likes of AI, Jerome, Don Reid, Henry Sims, Eric Floyd, Michael Jackson, Jahidi, Porter. Regardless, kudos to all who have donated and are in the process of donating.

Curious about how this facility's cost compares to that of other program's facilities. Don't get me wrong. I am more than OK with a high cost because I want this thing to be a real advantage. The more, the better to me. But looking around, it looks like it's costing a lot more than others. Not sure if it's due to our location in a more expensive area or the fac that this covers more than just basketball. Kansas' was done in 2009 for about $25mm. Kansas State is getting one for $17.6mm. Iowa State did one in 2009 for $8mm. Syracuse's cost them around $15mm in 2009 (although that's just construction cost so probably a few more million all in). Even Kentucky's was only $30mm. So is the JT2 Center going to be really sweet?

So is the JT2 Center going to be really sweet? It's mostly because the IAC is much bigger than a lot of those facilities. For instance Kansas St's is 50,000 sq ft. This IAC is 144,000 sq ft. UK: 102,000 Sq ft Cuse 54,000 sq ft Iowa St 29,000 sq ft So it's bigger, we live in a more expensive area than all of those schools you listed, and it's also going to be really sweet

In addition, our building costs also tend to be higher because we are looking to shoehorn buildings into a highly constrained amount of space.

Cost per square foot: Iowa State: $275 Syracuse: $277 Kentucky: $294 Kansas State: $360 Georgetown: $430 Don't get me started on square foot rates for the MSF. Notre Dame built a multi-sport (lacrosse) stadium for $7.5 million that would have cost five times that in Georgetown's world. And it took 16 months! Check the photos. www.und.com/facilities/alumni-stadium.html

I get it that the Gtown university resides on a more expensive piece of real estate than other schools. But nonetheless doesn't the university own the land it is on or is it just leasing it? If it is the former explain to me why it would cost so much more to build a new facility/building on your own property? It would be more understandable if the school was actually buying homes and new pieces of land in the area, subjecting itself to the going rates. But adding a structure to the campus itself? What is the university doing? Paying hush money to all the grumbling neighbors? Let me add I understand not undercutting value of, say, a home that one is trying to sell. But how does that work for building property or adding additions to a property on a piece of land that you own? Judging by what DFW is saying a construction company can build a new wing on College Park for one million dollars and then go to Georgetown and build an identical wing that will cost maybe four to fives times as much. Who is taking in that extra cash for a facility that took the same amount of man hours and materials to build? The government? The construction company? Vito Corleone?

Cost of living is much higher in DC, so the wages of the workers are probably that much higher.

Cost of living is much higher in DC, so the wages of the workers are probably that much higher. This is it. Construction costs are much much higher here. Ownership of the land doesn't have anything to do with it and isn't being calculated into the cost of the building. Materials also play a big part in this. To match all the darn carderock stone that is on most of the campus buildings (and thus the OGB will insist on using to match the rest ads a big expense right there I imagine). Puts into perspective how difficult it is to get things done around campus. We're dealing with a lot of obstacles financially. Just happy it's all coming together finally!
