I had a long discussion with one of the athletics development guys a few years ago... and for something like this, he said the key really is seven figure/eight figure donors. It takes 100 $10,000 donors to make just $1M. This thing needs sixty million.
It's not like anyone is turning down a $10,000 donation and I'm sure there's a lot of them. But You can work on 100 of those guys or put your time into a million dollar donor. It's just a matter of ROI.

Just saying we don't have to necessarily assume a naming-level donor behind the scenes, although it's definitely a possibility. How much $ does David Falk have these days?

If they had not named it after Pops I would have asked for my money back.

This is great, and perfect timing. Go Hoyas, beat Creighton! Hopefully something is similarly announced at the game tonight (and I imagine that Pops will likely be there).

So we're against building something that will help ALL 27% of the undergrads (or whatever the % is, it's high) who are D1 athletes?
And this will in no way allow us to finally overhaul Yates, which will benefit everyone?
Yeah, horrible idea.

It's not The HOYA speaking, it's six people who form the editorial board. This presents a problem for the paper because those six drive a policy that is attributed to the rest of them. Back in the Stone Age when I was in Copley Basement, editorials were voted by the entire editorial staff (including assistant editors) and it was the responsibility of the editor-in-chief to write them or designate it to someone who did, so you always knew who to blame if it went off center. The IAC...er, JTIAC has nothing to do with Georgetown's scramble on housing and predates this campus plan initiative by many years. It's like arguing Regents Hall and Hariri should have been retrofitted for housing, too. For that matter, 5th Healy is still open.

This is a pretty ridiculous editorial, but I suppose it's not surprising.
This is the part that I think is pretty ridiculous: "The space next to McDonough would not be ideal for student housing, and the Northeast Triangle on the other side of campus is making strides toward meeting Georgetown’s housing requirement, but putting the IAC over on-campus life again shows the administration’s priorities."
Over the last 15 years, the university has poured money into the on-campus life repeatedly, while devoting next to nothing to on campus athletic facilities. These are just the things I can recall going back to 1999 when I was a freshman: significant renovation of Harbin Hall to turn it from a dump into a fairly pleasant living experience, significant renovation to New South, building an entirely new housing complex in the Southwest Quadrangle, replacing awful New South Cafeteria with Leo's, significantly improving other dining options on campus, and I am sure I am missing things I am unaware of or forgetting.
The authors of the editorial lack perspective. The campus facilities for athletics have basically been untouched in the last 15 years (whether the MSF is an "improvement" of any type is highly debatable), whereas the "campus life" facilities have seen a substantial amount of improvement from 15 years ago when I started at Georgetown (that makes me feel really old).

Mr. (RusskyHoya), Each year, we ask alumni, parents, friends and fans of every program to make an impact by providing annual fund dollars for scholarships, team travel, equipment, recruiting and more. With seven weeks remaining in the fiscal year (ending June 30, 2014), we are $650,000 shy of our Athletics Annual Fund goal. Thank you for the gift you made in support of our student-athletes and for being a part of our efforts! The Athletics Annual Fund’s overall goal is comprised, in part, of individual dollar goals for each of our varsity programs as shown below. Congratulations to several programs who have exceeded or are well on their way to exceeding their goals. Thank you for making this possible. This is an exciting time in the history of Georgetown Athletics, as groundbreaking on the John R. Thompson Jr. Intercollegiate Athletics Center will take place this summer. During the expansion of our facilities, it is critical that we receive new and renewed support for The Annual Fund for Georgetown Athletics. Your gift has helped to sustain our current-use needs and we would not be able to provide our student-athletes with the Georgetown experience they deserve without your commitment. Please know how much your support is appreciated and valued. Together, We Are Georgetown! Lee E. Reed Director of Intercollegiate Athletics

The rest of that email is the breakdown of annual fund donations by sport, and the percent of the "goal" each sport has reached thus far. FWIW, 2014 Basketball is at $1,321,709 or 88% of a $1,500,000 goal. Last year when this same email was sent, 2013 Basketball was at $1,776,139, 89% of a $2,000,000 goal.

I would not draw any conclusion from the donation numbers other than that there has been tremendous pressure to donate to the IAC and that those donations are taking away from annual fund donations.

The goal donation level might also be less since we double our TV revenue with the new BE contract so the school probably doesn't need to raise quite as much money on it's own.
